ATI R420; AGP to PCI-express?

The <A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10001" target="_new">Inquirer</A> has this interesting article about the release of the R420 (what happened to the R400 they ask).

The thing I found interesting is the AGPtoPCI-Express adapter. Now that's nice. Too bad they don't have a PCI to AGP adapter so I could take my card to work (4mb intergrated intel!) even at the lower speed.

I would think the R400 name wasn't chosen due to it's similarity to NV40, and they may keep it for a lesser chip later (or it may be the AGP version what the heck do I know).

Someone in the discussion forum at the Inq. said it's because the number 4 is considered bad luck. But then why not R500? OR change the naming.

I like the name Loki though. Hehe, sticking with the Evil theme. Maybe I'll go from Evil goalie to Evil brother of Thor!

Anywhoo, looks interesting, and I'd love to see a mock-up board (similar to the one shown at the Intel convention?)

4gb/sec eachway* thru each pci plug. wierd !!!!! imagine the possibilities

Yeah I have imagined; (imagine, imagine, you can imagine.. sorry polka-dot-door flash back!), ever since the Intel expo with the PCI-exp Radeon 9700/9800(?).

Seriously triple monitor support All running their OWN top of the line Graphics cards. AWESOME on all levels. True amazing surround gaming (on super fine fast [>10ms] LARGE LCDs), plus just for multi-mon. desktop. Aswesome. Even if it meant getting a 1000W PSU with a 1500VA UPS I'd be there in an instant. I truely can't wait. And it may make me put of any upgrade decision until they come out, because now I could go back to the idea of: When this card gets old I'll move it down the line for multi-monitor support.

I have PCI-X in my Asus dual AMD rig., but that won't work, it's not PCI-EX, totally different!

Well my next rig will definitely have PCI-express, I may swap the Mobo in my current gaming rig to something with 200/400 FSB, but the next all-new rig will be built with this idea of 2-3 high-power cards running simultaneously.

Maybe if you build your next case large enough you can live inside, all nice and warm from the heat of the CPU/VPU. Wait you live in CA, better get compresor cooling.

Yes I have a feeling that my next desktop will cost as much to build as my laptops cost to buy. I just hope Large LCDs have come down enough (or OLEDs) to allow for a serious abuse of these new powers.

Nope, supposedly R400 had flaws and the R420 is an improved version of the first next-gen ATI chip.

I find it stupid that they skip a generation BEHIND doors. Why not stick to the same damn number, I mean, it is not released publically! They could go with revision numbers rather than waste a perfectly consistent model numbering.

can't wait for pci-express cards.. they can stream in both directions with the same speed, that allows much tighter integration between cpu and gpu, allowing much more complex interactions with much tighter and bether solutions. global illumination gets realtime.. can't wait.. tons of algorithms just wait for that hw...

and i know how the next ati card should look alike.. i really hope they do it that way.. it would be awesome. wish us all luck (it looks goood currently)

uhm.. not much around, no. after a hd crash in january i dropped working at home for some bit, and voilà, Real Life (tm) couth me. i fell in love again, found friends, all the stuff, you know (like in the sims). currently, i'm just starting to code again. but i'm coding software-only for now, means no radeon support.. it will follow afterwards, partially. just waiting for some opengl extensions to get added (namely GL_ARB_überbuffers or how they ever get called..).
