ATT and dsl

When I try to hook my laptop to the phone line upstairs it does not work. Have tried turning the computer and modem off then restarting, checked the phone line, checked connections. It shows that it is connected from the computer to the "local connection" but not to the network. I am not very computer literate, but can following instructions. Any help appreciated. ltrow

Presumably you are connecting to the phone line via a DSL modem or router ? Does that connection work with other computers ?

When you say "upstairs" does that mean an extension ?

The modem or router should be connected to the primary outlet (the first in from the street). Extensions and all phones should be filtered.
