Audible clicks in time with CD drive light

I am getting audible clicks from my speakers when playing an audio CD. These clicks are synchronised with the LED on the front of the CD drive, ie., LED flashes, and I hear a click. Happens on all CDs I have tried. When the same file is played off the hard drive, no clicks.

What could be causing these clicks ? Audio system on MB is Analog Devices Soundmax AD 1968A. I have just upgraded the driver; made no difference.

I have the small 4 wire cable connected from the CD drive to the motherboard. Is this necessary ?

Bad grounding souce. Motherboard interference. What soundcard do you have?
