Question:

If I have Windows XP set for auto update (download and
install) for the default 3:00 a.m.. But my PC is usually
powered off at this time. When my PC is powered off
during the scheduled update time have I "disabled" the
auto update feature?
Thank-you

Of course. There is no way your computer can receive anything if the power is
off.

No, you have not. Your computer will download the updates while your
computer is on...the time you set is the INSTALL time.
