B.S Computer Science VS Certifications

Hey folks,

Im in middle of a jam here. I have three IT certification but they are a little dated. i was thinking B.S. Computer Science while I update my certs. I have about 2 years of experience In IT. Looking to pick up more skills and experience. Currently NOT working it sucks but I figure get a outsiders POV. Is the B.S. Computer Science worth anything? Many tell me get certs and get work but many company's are political and want someone with collage diploma. I am in the NYC area so any info on schools, non-profit organization, or any program can help. I appreciate any positive feedback. hope you all doing well. TY!

Of course it is, it gives you all the foundation you need. And the certificates help expand your knowledge. Employers look at degrees and experience.

Realize the difference between Computer Science and IT certs. A CS degree is all about programming. From start to end of college you will not have a single course that doesn't involve programming in any computer language (C, C++, C#, Java, Python, etc.). IT Certs usually mean you proficient in a certain area of IT.

Bottomline: IT and Computer Science are two completely different areas of computing. It's all about what you like to do.

CS is more about data structures and Big O notation. IT is about managing computer hardware. Not related.

I have several certifications ranging from CompTIA to CNSS and my Bachelor's degree is what got me a job in the career field that I wanted. That is not say without a degree you cannot find a job that you enjoy, but it is certainly more difficult because of the current level of competition within IT.

With a BS in CS you can do a lot of things in the IT field, but like many have said, your experience is going to more in-line with programming, data structures, etc. There's good money to be had in it, but make sure you enjoy math and programming before you enroll. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea then perhaps you could look into Management Information Systems, it is more business, management and networking-centric.

Get your degree. Figure out what you like best about computers, programming, networking, hacking etc then make your decision.

Programming: Go to a good school that will provide you with a bachelors of science in software engineering. (great paying job, hard to find work as there are a lot of experienced software engineers out there looking for work)

Networking: Go to a good school that will provide you with a bachelors of science in network engineering ( good paying job, with a lot of possible jobs out there)

Hacking: (same as above, go to a good school that will provide you with a bachelors of science in cyber-security ( best option now for the next 3 - 5 years, HOT job market because so many banks, government, schools, industry are being hacked to death by foreign countries stealing our secrets)

The big thing with going to school is this: Honestly evaluate your skills, are you strong in math & english? Every bachelors program requires you to take algebra, advanced algebra, calculus and advanced math, same for english, you learn how to write reports, tech papers, resumes, and more. If you are weak or lacking skills, make sure you go to a school that has a math and english lab where they provide you with one on one help on a walk in basis. I have a HUGE math phbia and my school got me through all the math with a B+ average and a GPA of 3.55 overall.

You also want to insure that the school has good, interesting electives. All schools are required to make sure you take electives in humanities, social sciences and art. You don't want to go to a school that is lacking in these areas and you will get stuck taking a class you hate and won't do well in because you had to take something to complete your requirements for the degree.

Study and knowledge always help us and never thought like B.S. Computer Science is time wastage. Also the knowledge gained through work for your Job also.
