Backup of CIV CD

I have now had 2 Civ III CD's damaged by my kids. The last one I made a
copy of it's contents to a folder on my system. I've tried burning it to
another disc, but I can't seem to fool the system. I've ben addicted to
this game since 1993, but I don't want to buy another copy of something I've
already bought twice. Is there anyway around this?

no offence intended, but why the hell are your kids damaging your cd's...
especially the same one "twice"!!! if they can't be around your disks then
you need to:

1) punish them somehow for breaking them in the first place.
2) move the cd's to a place that they can't get to.
3) you and you mate need to have a long heart-to-heart talk about why the
heck your kids seem to lack the discipline to NOT break stuff that isn't
theirs in the first place...

as for your symptoms of the problem, namely the broken disks... no can help
there, try some warez, or crackz sites, they may be able to help with your
burned cd problem.

u shud try clone cd or alcohol 120% they create images of urcd on to ur hard
drive then u copy the image back to a blank cd

I use a virtual cd program. I create a virtual cd of the Civ disk.
The computer thinks that the actual cd is loaded and the program runs
just as if it was.

All of you know you need the original CD's to make valid copies with
these programs. I agree with God. He just needs to deal with his
kids. He is resorting to stealing in order handle his kids
carelessness. You have to wonder what they will do next. Computers
are too expensive to be playing around.

I used Alcohol 120% with the safedisc and made a backup copy of Conquests
that works pretty well. The are other programs out there for backups they
seem to run between $40 and$50.

The problem is that my wife and I forget to put the disk up. My kids still
too young to expect to keep his hands off things. Oh, and who said anything
about steeling. I read the license agreement, I'm entitled to use both
copies, even if they're scratched up. It's currently installed on my
system, it just insists I insert the disk. I guess I'll have to go buy it.
Been looking into Conquests anyway.

If you buy Conquests it will ask for that CD instead of the original
one.

Otherwise all you really need is a no-cd patch. I think you basically
replace the orginal exe with a patched version which doesn't do the
secue check. Make sure you back up the original first and virus scan
the patched file.

Use of a backup cd, virtual cd, or no-cd crack does not equal
stealing. I use no-cd cracks and virtual cd's for almost everything I
own, but I still own the program.
And we've dealt with the kids problem before in here as well.
First, seeing your posts is not going change how he deals with his
children, so why bother making those types of comments. Secondly,
maybe there is a reason for the damaged cd's.
Basically what I'm saying is either cut him a break or ignore him.
The flames aren't necessary, helpful, or in the spirit of this
(generally very friendly) newsgroup community.

Since making backup copies of software you already own is allowed, I would
hardly call it stealing.

Well, since it's too late to back it up, any idea where I can find the no-cd
patch? In the midst of Christmas shopping, wife wouldn't be happy if I buy
a new game (Conquests). Besides, wouldn't be surprised if she already
bought it for me. Just have to wait.

I don't use them myself. Here is a general description of what to
look for:

Replacing the exe with a patched version is the easiest. There is a
link at the bottom but I am not sure if you have winrar or of the PTW
patch will work. You need Civ III 1.29f.

It appears the people who use these would rather bitch at me than
provide details where to get them.

Finding No-CD for the game with patches can be tricky. I can't
point to a URL, but you can try searching different no-CD sites and
hope to find one which works.

The alternative is to make a disk image file, and load from that.
Takes up more hard drive space, but it has the advantage of working
with future patches -- something which no-CD cracks may not do. One
more patch is anticipated for Conquests, though I don't know how long
it will be before it's out.

Head down to your local Radio Shack and buy their CD/DVD "repair device".
It's basically a very mild abrasive system, lubricated by alcohol,
that polishes the scratches out of the CDs and DVDs. It works well,
I have only found one (very deeply scratched) CD that it couldn't deal
with. Paid for itself the first time I used it. No affiliation with,
yadda yadda yadda.

Maybe you missed the part about him having the originals (twice, even)?
Or, are you considering this as stealing anyway, because the media is
damaged and he still wants to use what he has paid for?

Did you try it? I am pretty sure, that it will work as no-cd exe. Since
the main purpose of the "fixed exes" is to remove the need of using cd
while playing.

The only one I have in exe format wants to uninstall my program rather
than fix it.

I don't know if it wants to uninstall and then reinstall or not, but I
didn't want to take chances just now.

The other programs are RAR format and I don't have a decomppressor for
RAR files.

Usually you rename the original exe file (which the game is started), for
example Civ3Conquests.exe to Civ3Conquests.exe_orig and copy the "fixed
exe" to that same name. Purpose being that you can undo the thing just
deleting the fixed one and renaming file to original form (removing
_orig).

You apply all the original patches you want to use and after that do that
renaming thing. This because the patches don't work with the "fixed exe".
