Backup to a series of CD_RW's

I am using Windows XP SP1 and I want to backup my data to
a series of CD-RW's. The backup starts on the first CD
OK but when it gets to the end I get an error message
that "the file is too large for the medium" and the
backup process stops. Your KB article 315255 states that
you can't back up to a CD-RW at all but in my case the
backup seems to start.
Help!! What do I do now? Will this problem be fixed in
SP2?

Are your files your trying to back up more than 650 to
700mb? If thats why you're getting the error message.
Your files are to big for CD-RW. CD-RW's only store
between 650 to 700MB each depending on which ones you
buy. You might need to put them on more than one CD-RW.
Unless its programs you are trying to back up.

If you have XP PRO try using the ASR (automated system recovery) wizard. I
think it will do disk spanning. Otherwise you need to either make a series of
folders no bigger than around 620MB or purchase a backup program that will do
disk spanning. {]:~)

The NTBackup program that comes with XP cannot backup to CD-R or CD-R/W
without a workaround http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/saving_files_to_cd.htm
.. Is it possible that you have packet writing software on your computer and
are using a packet formatted disk? In that case NTBackup will write directly
to the disk. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) NTBackup doesn't split
files or span disks. You really should look at third party software or even
get a second hard drive to backup with. There is a number of decent 3rd
party imaging software solutions that can meet your needs. I used to be a
die hard Norton Ghost user but have switched to Acronis TrueImage.

You'll need to use backup software that supports spanning across
multiple removable media. The crippled backup program in NT-based
Windows will only support tape to span across multiple removable media.
So either get a tape drive, get better backup software, or backup to a
drive if you have the space and then use better CD burning software that
lets you span the backup fileset across multiple CD-R[W]s.
