Battery Back Up

Hello,
I'm installing an APC battery back up to my desktop and the instructions don't state how close the back up unit may be placed to the PC tower only that it may not be closer than 30cm / 12" to the monitor screen is there any general recommended distance or can it stand next to the tower, providing that it doesn't intefere with the ventilation flow.
