Better than what I have now, BENQ XL2411 came with no speakers D:

I highly recommend the Logitech "Z" series of speakers. They come with a little subwoofer and in 2, 2.1, "5.1" formats. I have an older "5.1" set and they sound quite decent for the price. I mean, they aren't studio quality or anything but certainly enough for gaming and the occasional YouTube jam session. The only aspect I don't like concerning this older set is that they don't "really" do 5.1 anywhere outside the test you can run in Windows. I have yet to see a situation where they actually provide sound to the rear speakers in that mode. However, if you run them as 2.1 the system does a virtual surround multi speaker stereo thing that fills them in nicely.

I just picked up an AOC CQ27G2 and am quite happy with it. I particularly enjoy the G Sync Compatible nod as it works seamlessly with my GTX GPU. My only complaint is the "bad in a well lit room" aspect. It doesn't pose any issue most of the time and particularly for browsing or such. Dark gameplay areas can be a bit challenging if the sun is coming in.

Just watched a review on that one, could be a top contender! does it have a speaker?

I think I paid something like $30 for the Amazon refurb ones several years ago.

Thanks I'll give them a look, been meaning to pick a pair of speakers up for awhile, sick of using my second monitors speaker lol.
Also can you explain the response times to me and what it actually does? says the one you have is about 6-7 ms where the LG is 1ms.

Lol, I wish that I could explain it well. Very generally the response time is a measure of how quick the pixels can react for a color change. Added to that, and an aspect that is not always clear in advertising is the added delays due to (human) reaction time, the PC itself ("lag") and so on.
In a very general sense, when buying a "gaming" computer you want it's advertised response time to be 5ms or less. In real world it will be higher when other factors are accounted for.

I love my Asus ROG Swift PG279Q 27" monitor but the price on them went crazy. They use to be just under $600 when on sale.

Just be aware with IPS panels there will be some backlight bleed.
Could you link me to the exact one please? And when did that monitor first come out? doesnt look like they sell them anymore

PG279QR should still be around. I will check. You are right, seems to be gone now. Still the orignal for $1100, but no, that is more than launch price $800.

Probably the logical successor:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2jqBD3/asus-rog-strix-xg279q-270-2560x1440-170-hz-monitor-xg279q

But if you wanted the same LCD panel as the PG279Q that is found in the still available MG279Q, it is the free-sync version.

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/c298TW/asus-monitor-mg279q

Should work with a 1070.

Other options in that price range:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/K2cRsY/dell-s2721dgf-270-2560x1440-165-hz-monitor-s2721dgf

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/HG...a-270-2560x1440-165-hz-monitor-aorus-fi27q-sa

There are cheaper options from Gigabyte and ASUS, but I don't know how good they are.

Well, that is a TN panel, so it will have poor viewing angles and not great color accuracy. If you are only gaming or consuming media, this can be okay.

Though if it is like the original production G-Sync monitor PG278Q then it won't be as bad as cheaper TN panels, as you can see it has an insane response time. And it is relatively inexpensive. This is one I would like to see in person before ordering. Only reason I never picked up a PG278Q was because I already had an ASUS TN panel and they have a lot of flaws. Viewing from above or below is particularly bad, though this one has a stand so you can adjust the eye level if needed.

Though considering how long people tend to keep monitors, I say buy a little ahead of the curve. Those IPS panels at 165 and 170hz are really 144hz panels overclocked. When you run that at 144hz, they do a really good job when it comes to response times, so there is little loss and you end up with the viewing angles and better colors.

A 250-400 dollar display will have its limits no matter how wonderful it is purported to be.
A 27" and above takes a little discipline because if you sit close to it you will definitely notice a small amount of brightness loss at each edge.
I came from an old viewsonic 27 lcd panel to an asus 32" curved 1440p 165 hz(VG32VQ1B) , and once I got my eyes the correct distance from the thing it has stunned me every day for the last few months I have been on it. It is a TN panel, it is way brighter than my old panel, it is sharp as a tack, and fast.
I only play a few AAA titles, and e-sports gaming like CSGO, pubg are not my thing. But if they were, I think I'd be okay(cheaper ips panels aren't made for speed, regardless of refresh rate).
As you mention, the choices are overwhelming. I really only grabbed this as a black friday deal as it was too good to turn down and after a month of research I had it on my short list when it came up.

Your average monitor is now 'gaming' ready

Well, it is an IPS display, but similar in specifications to many others listed. Generally if they have the same rough stats and cost, they are likely to be the same LCD panel. But keep in mind that LCD panels are graded and sold based on their true capabilities, so your cheaper monitors are likely to be a lesser grade.

It was a lot easier when G-sync and FreeSync were new, and there were maybe 30 monitors to look at. Now you have 30 monitors from single brands.

Rtings.com gives the reasonable prize to the ViewSonic XG270CQ, but it is $600. For a budget option they propose the Gigabyte M27Q at $330, though I agree with them that a limited stand is inconvenient. Absolute winner is a 240hz 1440p Odyssey G7 from Samsung at $700. Between 600 and 700, I would spend the 700.

I don't think you will be disappointed with most of the choices listed out here and above. If you are coming from a 1080p 60hz monitor, it will be night and day. If you are coming from a 120/144hz 1080p, it will just be a larger screen effectively.

Real problem is getting a single reviewing outfit thousands of dollars in monitors to do a roundup. And given that LCD panel revisions happen constantly, they are almost immediately out of date.

Usually dribs and drabs, or biased reviews when sent samples.

Heck, just even going to the features pages for these monitors is a mixed bag. Some will give you decent details in their marketing materials, but then none of that makes its way to the spec sheet. Or they will outright leave out really important things like bit depth or connector type. 2 HDMI is great, but what kind... and that sort of thing.

TFTCentral.co.uk is another decent resource. They do in depth testing as well, but they are quite the read per monitor.

These options seem well thought out. Good place to start.
