i would go with a muti core server processor with alot of ram. esecially if your are going to be running several VM ware at the same time. if you want to go cheap you could possibly get away with an FX processor ( as an opteron Interlagos runs the almost the exact same cores as the FX but less cache ... funny huh..) or if you can afford it i would go with an xeon e5 series... ( runs off the sandy bridge extreme design)
