Best CPU Upgrade for my System

I want to upgrade my CPU and want to know what is the best one I can get for my system. I have this:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz
ASUS P5B Deluxe
Crucial Ballistix 2 x 1GB PC2 6400 4-4-4-12, 2.2V

What would be the best CPU I can get for this system? Thanks.

My budget for a CPU upgrade is around $150. I'm just curious to know how much I can upgrade my Asus P5B Deluxe for around that price range.

well seeing as this topic says exactly what i want, I figured I'ld post my question here. I am looking to build a system mainly for windows media center to use as a dvr and the likes. I plan on a Asus P5N-SLI mobo, and am not sure which would be the fastest/best cpu to use. My price range has narrowed it down to the p4 550j 3.4ghz or the Celeron e1500 2.2ghz dual core. Can someone please tell me if the celeron being dual core would be like 1.8 times the 2.2ghz like the core 2 cpu are? Or at least which cpu would be the fastest. Thanks

don't go for celeron if u want to use it for media.

And no having two cores doesn't double ur speed it just means that the CPU can handle more tasks at once. It is like having two equally intelligent people doing two things. they aren't two times the speed the are just two times the workers in place of one person doing everything.

But don't take the Celeron. They are for mainstream users. Unless u aren't very serious about media, etc. don't take it.

OK, I been doing some research, but the only place I was able to find comparisons of the P4 and the Dual core Celeron is http://www.cpu-world.com/benchmarks/ . However, they only have a E1200 Celeron to compare, which is only 1.6 ghz. But going thru the benchmark test results, the celeron performed quite surprisingly. There were 22 different tests, and the E1200 beat Celeron D 356 3.33ghz 18 outta 22, beat the P4 510 2.8 ghz 19 outta 22, beat the P4 530 3 ghz 18 outta 22, beat the P4 540 3.2 ghz 17 outta 22, beat the P4 560 3.6ghz 13 outta 22, and beat the P4 660 3.6ghz 12 outta 22 ........ And like I said thats only the 1.6 ghz E1200, I would think that the E1500 2.2ghz would really kick butt. But these are test results on performance, which in my opinion, should be the majority of what makes a cpu good. Am I missing something else?

this is because u compared dual core against single core. if u compared the celeron dual core against pentium dual core then u would see how much worse the celeron was than the pentium.

check this out, it is the same E1200 against a pentium dual core. the pentium did better than the celeron.

the main reason is that pentiums have more cache and can run at a higher speed than a celeron. And if u get the pentium u can get much better overclocking results.
with a celeron, u can run into many problems, they are not meant to be upgraded and not meant to be used for intense apps.

Well the P4 single core is what I want to compare to, as that is what I was thinking of buying (550J). This is because the dual core Pentium is atleast twice the money. So between the Celeron E1500 and the P4 550J, which one would you reccommend?? Or are you saying neither would work well for my app??I did find the E5300 at about 1.5 times the cost of the 550j, how does it stack up?

OK, I did a little more research and found that I can get a Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5ghz cpu for 71.00, but I can not find any benchmark test results on it to compare with the other cpu's. So would the E5200 be a better choice for me?

Please, I am on a fixed buget, so these are my 3 choices ..... P-4 550j - 49.00 ; Celeron E1500 - 61.00 ; Pentuim dual core e5200 - 70.00 ........ I assume that the e5200 is by far the best choice, anyone dispute this ?? Thanks.

I'm sorry, should I have started a new thread with pretty much the same title? I assumed to keep things together so when people do a search that I would post under this thread. Anyhow, I am building a new system to use windows media center with as a dvr type system, so it dont have to be a kick _ss system, and I dont over clock, play major games, ect. Just trying to put together a system that will work well for what I need it for, Planning on installing a bluray/dvd writer in it, ect. Thanks.

With the Nehalem processors being updated I would wait to do a full system upgrade. I would just get a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and live with it for now. Alos you should get about 4gb of RAM.

bks81, I would go with the pentium dual core E5200 if u are on a tight budget. If u can u should save up and go with core 2 quad , 4gig RAM etc.

But for ur budget I say the Pentium dual core, best deal u will get, and good processor for the budget.

I recommend the E8400 also. It outperforms all but the most expensive of Quads. Even that is marginal in most tests. Most Quad cores have workers sitting idle at their desks, to stick with the analogy given earlier

e8400 most crazy cpu i have used in my life and add a collit domino for about 60$ it's an overclocker killer system has long you have good memory like corsair or kingston
