best/fastest CPU for socket 939?

I recently had turned my 939 to C2D system. And I can say I am happy with the result.

I kept my PCIe 7900GT/DDR-400/RaptorX 150GB

Bought E4300 & Asrock Dual-VSTA mobo $177+59 from newegg.

Stock cooler, FSB266, OC to 2.4Ghz. I have managed to get it up to 2.6Ghz but it's not as stable. I am happy with 2.4Ghz for now.

SuperPi runs 1M@26sec and pass 16M also.

Pros: @2.4ghz = E6600, cheap. Options to OC higher with better hardware. Performance could rival the best C2D CPU.
Cons: PCIe x4. I do notice my FPS is capped by the bandwidth.


P.S. When i saved up some $$$. I will get the Gigabyte DS3 or S3 + 2GB of DDR2. Then I will OC it to 3+ghz

I dunno. A $160 Opty 165 is hard to beat. But still, your money is better spent on an Intel.

1) it aint a E6600, it only has half the cache
2) my E6600 at stock gets a super pi score of 20 seconds

otherwise, cheap upgrades are great and overclocking makes it so worth it

I see the OP has a vested interest in that $250 motherboard and perhaps the RAM. I agree that m/b is one of the best I've come across, so I also tend to suggest upgrading within socket 939.

The best CPU in this case depends on the ratings of that RAM. If it is rated for only DDR400 at CL2, then the FX60 is the best upgrade. If it is rated for DDR450 or higher at that timing, then the Opty 175 or 185 would be best (they're close, so compare the prices/availability).

By the way... "cpu: AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ (OC to 2.001ghz)"... stock speed of that CPU is 2.0 ghz so you haven't even overclocked it! Who knows, if it goes to 2.7 ghz with async RAM I'd say forget about upgrading to something that maxes out at 3-3.1 ghz synchronous. The differences would be too small to be worth the effort.

P.S. E4300 + ASRock dual-VSTA is not an upgrade because you'd be going from a high-end to a low-end motherboard & CPU. Allendale is hardly faster than Toledo after the overclocks, and A8N32-SLI is one of the most stable overclocking boards - combined with an SOI CPU, you can usually tell stable from unstable overclocks within 30 seconds on Orthos.

Core 2 Duo's beyond ~2.4ghz (overclock or stock) are far more powerful then anything AMD can offer, and face it, any core 2 duo can do it and beyond at a better price.

Hello everyone,

I have got my hands over a FREE Motherboard, Powersupply, 2 chips of 512MB DDR PC3200 400MHz, two 60 GB HDDs, and DVD-RW with a NIC card (All for free). I have brought this pieces from several different salvaged PCs.

The motherboard which supports Socket 939 has once been used with an Acer Desktop. There is no part number to it from Acer but the here is what I see on the board:

M/B MBP310900360606B2FEK06
The digits before B and the last one can be 5 as it's not very clear.

I don't know if anyone recognizes this but I am looking for a CPU for this. The Opteron ones are too expensive for dollar value. (Remember I promised myself to build a free PC! LOL!). But the better CPUs are tempting so I am willing to pitch some money.

The 3700 series can't be found for sale and thus again high prices.

What do you guys suggest would get me the best vale, best price to build this system.

It will be used as an entertainment system. No hardcore gaming. But maybe as home theater system. It's worthy to note that the motherboard only supports PCIe and PCI (Not even AGP). So, I can't really use it for gaming.

If you can STILL get an Opty 165, DO IT! They are great to OC, and cheap. I grabbed on a while back and love it. Will keep me going for a long time.

I've got a dual core Opteron 170 that has been stable at 2.7 for the past 2 years at 1.3-1.4 volts.. and the A8R32M-MVP (best 939 mobo) and Patriot DDR400 2x1GB.. i'll sell it to you if you want.. lol

havent been at TOMS forum very long, but in my experience, why does every budget AMD tread turn into this BUY INTEL IT PWNS ALL

Well, If you would have gotten here about 7-8 months go (before the release of Core Duo 2) then you would have gotten the reverse. Every budget Intel thread turns into AMD Rulz All, Cheaper, faster and half the heat of an Intel !

Right now, Intel is top dog again, so the raving pyshco enthusists in us all, tends to runs wild whenever someone talks about upgrading an AMD.

I fully understand his pain, as about 7 months ago I went through the same debate. I needed )well wanted) a PCI-e Mobo cause I wanted the new X1900XTX, but I didn't want to have to buy a new CPU and memory, along with a new Video card and Mobo. So I opted to stay with the 939, instead of the AM2. Sadly enough about 3 months later I upgrade to 2GB of memory (2x1GB) and then 2 months later bought the 4800+ to repalce my 3800+ clawhammer

Now I think, if I could have just waited on that dang video card, I could have me a new Core duo 2 system. I spent the same amount of money, just spread it out over 7 months.

I think if I was him, I'd old off spending anything until I could get a whole new rig. As I don't know that the money spent on even a 4800+ or Opty 185 will really pay out.

I did the same thing. Had the very same debate. Doesnt matter anymore I play WoW, lol. I just like new stuff.

I don't know if I recommend paying ebay $150 for 939 AMD 4400, or $180 for a 4800, or $250+ for a FX60, but if you find a 4200 X2 for $70, it might be a good value if you do alot of video compression or Crysis. If you already have a decent NF4 mobo and a single core, it might be worth the upgrade to drop in X2. They keep up pretty close in-game with the AM2 5400x2's. I still dont think the AM2 dual core stuff is much faster than a dual core 939 overclocked a bit to 2.8ghz on up. If you have an old socket 754, you wouldn't be reading this forum anyways, and you probably happy with AOL and your 56k dial up.

This spring I delayed buying a Agena and ended up OC'ing some life into my old AMD 3700+ to 2.8ghz, Dual channel Mushkin DDR400, and just installed a used PNY 9800GTX. It seems to run all my old games at >100fps, and Crysis at 45fps on medium 1600x1200. Now, Im hooked on Combat Arms, and it flys - no dual core needed.

I'm in a similar boat. Took a 3 year break from Audio editing. Just ordered my first HDV Camcorder and now I'm coming to the sore realization that my "great system" is sorely outdated, under gunned, and on the verge of being completely phased out.

Can anyone suggest cost effective upgrades to the following system before I shoot for a full upgrade?

I'll be using Adobe Cs4 to edit HD.
