[SOLVED] Best gaming CPU for LGA775

Hi guys, I have a problem here: I bought Red Dead Redemption 2 but my system specs are too low to play it: the game simply crashes right before entering the gameplay.

My specs are:
CPU = Intel 2 Core Quad Q9650
GPU = NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti
RAM = 8 GB

Sadly, my motherboard is extremely old: it's a Fujitsu 2008 LGA775 socket I guess.
Even though I know that the best solution would be to upgrade my motherboard, still I want to upgrade my CPU: so, what's the more performing CPU for LGA775 socket?

The Q9650 is basically the best you can do on LGA775... you can go with the QX, but you'll see insignificant improvement over what you have now.
LGA775 is obsolete and a dead end.

Unfortunately a platform upgrade is needed.
Something like a Ryzen 5 2600 or 1600AF(if available) would be miles ahead.

If you are on a budget, just get any i5 preferably a Haswell since you can use your existing DDR3.

- grab a used i5-4570 + Mainboard cheap somewhere (or 4460/4690/4770)

why i mention i5-4570 as they are popular (in Dells, HP's etc)
an i5-4570s is fine too, still does 3.6 turbo.

This will be a huge leap in gaming power and will boost your GTX 1050 hugely.
my upgrade from Phenom II (same as yours in power) -> i7-2600 -> i5-4570 was a big leap
the i5-4570 was far superior than the i7-2600

This way you can swap out just the CPU and MB, plug in Win10 and it will load everything fine.
(probably just need to re-activate windows after thats all, but no re-install of win10 is required)

I personally kept going and now have an i7-4790k, which suits my GTX 1070 (gpu limited)

If you can’t overclock with that board I think it’s time for a upgrade. If you want the cheapest upgrade I’d go with a x58 system maybe a dell precision t3500 ,if you got a bit more cash to burn I’d see if you can upgrade to a more basic ryzen system even if it’s only a first gen cpu it’s gonna be a big upgrade over your current system. Best to get a newer mother board though like a b450 so you can upgrade later down the road.

As others have already written, there is no meaningful upgrade available on LGA775.

If your aim is to get RDR2 running smoothly, you will need to upgrade to modern-day hex-cores CPU (i5-8400+ or Ryzen 1600AF/2600), ideally 16GB of DDR4-3000+ and an appropriate motherboard.

The 1050Ti will be a substantial bottleneck, you will need to run at close to lowest details to get decent frame rates out of it.

READ what i mentioned: - "grab a used i5-4570 + Mainboard"

you will need to swap out the mainboard, then plug back in your PSU, GPU & Sata HDD's, etc
it's really basic stuff, just have good light and take your time.

this what you can expect, as a GTX 960 is roughly equivalent power to a GTX 1050 ti

30 FPS, better than nothing

AMD Radeon is more optimised unfortunately for RDR2,
when RDR2 was 1st released - i had gone from a RX580 to a GTX 1070,
and the RX580 beat the 1070 in RDR2 (only that game lol)

However Minimum requirements for RDR2
(that the OP didn't read, like he didn't read my post properly)
i5 2500 is the minimum.

Im usually not one to advise to buy older parts but Kent has a point.The cheapest way is to get a 4570+ and a 1150 mobo and upgrade from there but....your limiting factor are your gpu.I had a R5 2600 with a gtx 1050 ti and would get bottle necked so hard.Even the I5 4th gen will get bottlenecked.After everything save up for if you don't have a better psu and a better gpu.

Just to add (im looking at the cheapest route for the OP)

when i had an i5-4570 + RX580, benchmarks did not increase when i replaced the i5-4570 with an i7-4770
but a definitive difference when i went to a GTX 1070 (i then grabbed a 4790k)

However RDR2 would definitively benefit from an 8 thread CPU as it's a latest game.

ideally a full upgrade is recommended, but you could get by with used i7- 4770 + mainboard + RX580 4GB for RDR2.
- The cheapest solution, but get what you can find - from reliable traders with good reps.

There's practically nothing faster than the q9650 for lga775. You're lucky that you have one and haven't had to upgrade until now--but you're at the end of the tracks at this point and need a newer platform. Just no way around it.

Nothing you can do here, full rebuild required. New CPU (at least hexa-core) and mobo, new DDR4 RAM (preferably 16GB) and a much faster GPU as well. RDR2 is notorious for being slow even on a much faster rigs than yours, so that's what it takes unfortunately.

I got a Xeon X5460 (stock 3.16 GHz) running at 4.1 GHz in a secondary rig, and yes, while there is a bit to gain, it will not be enough for recent games. Even with massive OC you won't get the Q9650 up to the performance you'd need.

So get some new hardware and either sell the old stuff or keep it as 2nd machine for lighter gaming (or office, or when a friend comes over, etc)

Take your GTX1050Ti with you, and ...well, buy everything else new. If your PSU is from that era, leave it behind as well)

An R5-3600 and B450 would be a nice start...

We have one PC with an LGA775 motherboard, Q9550, and 8Gb RAM. This PC is used exclusively for email and the internet. My next 'upgrade' for this platform is the recycle bin. Yeah, it's pretty much a dead end as far as I'm concerned, but it does do what we use it for.
