Best graphics card for skyrim

I don't think skyrim will require a 6950 to play at max settings, they said it is the same as consoles except with higher res textures and a few slider bars for some extra details. So I'm guessing a 6850 should be able to run it at max

i haven't heard official requirement for the game yet. but if you want smooth game play with max setting you will look for at least GTX570 / HD6970. however that's just my own opinion. until the dev announced the recommended hardware to run the game it is hard to predict what hardware we need to run it on max setting. we will only know what it takes to run the game when the game officially out or tested by reviewer. still remember when CD Projekt recommend GTX260 for the game but yet the game run like an ultra crap with my GTX460 with uber setting 😛

Then buy the biggest, baddest GPU you can afford. Seriously, though, without detailed requirements, you can only guess. That being the case, a Nvidia 570 (or higher) or Radeon HD69XX or higher should more than meet your needs. This assumes that the rest of your rig is up to the task as well.

The Bethesda games have never been particularly graphic intensive. If I had to guess something along the lines of an GTX 460/HD6850 will do fine. If you have the money though go for a 2gb HD6950 as I know for the previous games the mods such as HD texture packs love a lot of video memory.

I would Disagree with the needing 2gb, unless your doing tripple monitor or 2560x1600 monitor u dont need more then 1 - 1.5 or vram. infact theres only 2 games i know if right now that use even more then 1gb ( Crysis 2 and Metro 2033 ) in my opinion i would get the gtx 570, it beats the 6950 and ur still getting more then 1gb ram u can even get the 2.5gb if u really want but again unless u running high res there is no need!

+1. The only reason i would disagree with this, is if OP wanted to do a multiple card setup in the future, which then id recommend the 6950 for xfire.

i dont think it will be that demanding either, but if OP wants overkill for the game, he will find that that there are many more demanding games worth a shot with the step up in hardware.

FYI:
I hit 900MB of Video RAM when running Fallout New Vegas.

It's very likely that the maximum settings for SKYRIM will be at least this and may even exceed 1GB.

New cards?
There are new cards coming out next year, possibly within three months of Skyrim's release. Personally, I'm going to WAIT and get either a new AMD 7000 series or NVidia 600 series. By then a lot of fixes will be made to Skyrim as well.

The new cards will use about HALF the power so they will be less noisy.

I'm looking for a card similar to a GTX580 that is far quieter and cheaper.

If he is going to play the game in it's default state then sure 1gb will likely be fine. I mentioned a 2GB card because Skyrim like all the other Elder Scrolls games is sure to have an insane number of mods. Having run both Morrowind and Oblivion with all the bells and whistles I know for a fact that the graphics mods can eat up video ram like crazy.

2gb would help. jyjjy is right, with the fact that oblivion did use a'lot of vram. But, i'm not big on mods; i like whatever bethseda makes.
And when i actually posted this i wasn't getting my 6850 😀. We'll see how it plays! I'm going to do some benchmarking.

Avoid the 6950. I got one for Christmas to play Skyrim. Of course it ran beautifully... for two weeks, until it overheated and got heat-damaged and now there's artifacts and display interference in all my games and in my normal computer apps. I have two fans running in a decently large case in addition to the two fans on the Sapphire Radeon 6950 card itself; still overheated. I'm sending it back and getting a GTX 570.
