Best Modem

What is the best dial up modem for under $100? I do not really care if it is internal or external. Thanks in advance.

The best one I think is U.S.Robotics performace Pro code #3CP5610A (I think so). It is $70, it has special gaming feature. it is 56k and V.90, but soon there will an update for it to set it NEW V.92 standard, but don't update unless your ISP supports it. I know soon there will be V.92 144K modems

My best modem experience has been with those generic Lucent modems. Lucent makes a great modem chip set. Their modems are compatable with everything (down to a Pentium 90 with the right drivers), give good connections (to the limit of your line), and are very cheap, as low as $9. Ultra reliable. Every system I sell comes with a Lucent modem, and I have had only one faulty unit out of several hundred.

I don't like win modems because they are not supported by Linux.

And (IMO)...the performance is not as good as an external hardware modem.

I've had great performance with mine, but overall WinModems are probably not as great.

And even though they aren't supported by Linux, that's not a problem for most.

However, since the Lucent modem is good and dirt cheap, it's worth it.

I have that modem, and I gotta agree it's great. I'm sure AOL will be supporting the V.92 standard, so I will be upgrading. By the way, the 144K modem, that is V.92? And if I upgrade my 56K USR performance pro to V.92 off of USR's website, will it be able to get to speeds of 144K? Thanks.

eh..no..V.92 is not 144k modem, yo won't get that speed with AOL anyway, there are No upgrades currently, but they WILL be in about a month, if you play games then v.92 will help, it increases upstream so you'll get better ping, I'm going for 1.5mbps/768kbps DSL anyway.

Lucent makes a great modem chip set.

The chip on a Lucent modem is made by Agere. I didn't know that until I looked at the Lucent driver page. See <A HREF="http://www.lucent.com/micro/K56flex/driver.html" target="_new">here</A>.

Actually, Lucent doesn't make the chip, as I just found out. Check it out <A HREF="http://www.lucent.com/micro/K56flex/driver.html" target="_new">here</A>.

Oh yeah? Hmm...maybe the other way around? I know a lot of companies put stickers over chips made by other people. Could be something like that, where they bought the rights to put their own name on Agere's chip?

Switching to a 3rd party chip is very possible, though.

For over two years Lucent was printed on the chip itself. Now the chips have Agere printed on them. That leads me to believe that Lucent licenced them to a third party manufacturer.

Yeah, I didn't think it was a sticker, I was saying maybe they were actually printing their name on someone else's chip. It's very unlikely, but not impossible.
