BG2 SOA Bonus Disc?

I've been playing BG2 for a while, and I'm in chapter 4.

I have the "bonus disc" which is supposed to include more items, but for
some reason I never got around to installing it.

Is there a point to installing it now, or does it only have an effect on
newly-started games?

Where do the new items show up? In stores, in battles, in dungeons, all of
the above? What other benefits would I get from installing the disc?

Thanks,
chris.

I'll take a shot at answering this, since no one else has. I believe that
this may be the disc containing the "bonus merchants." When you install it,
you get two new merchants, Deirdre in the back of the Adventurer's Mart, who
sells Planescape stuff, and Joluv in the Copper Coronet, who sells Icewind
Dale stuff. I think but I'm not sure that you only get them if you haven't
yet been to the areas in which they appear, so you won't see them this game.

My Bonus disk includes:

- Dierdre, as you said, sells some cool but expensive items from the
Adventure Mart. Her best items IMO are the Shield of Balduran and the
Robe of Vecna. Most of her items are generally useful, though
expensive.

- Jayes (sp?) at night only, near the NE edge of the Promenade. He
has nothing really special but does sell a lot of +2 weapons that are
not all that expensive, and many of them are not available elsewhere
in Athkatla early in the game. I acquired a +2 longsword from him for
much cheaper than the Balduran sword that Dierdre sells.

As for Joluv, who sells Icewind Dale items at the Copper Coronet, he
comes on the Collector's CD which is a different disk. His stuff is
expensive and frankly not all that great considering the prices, but
it is interesting. The Collectors CD also had some extra artwork and
stuff, which I think you can find available for download around the
web.

Jayes is NOT a Bonus Merchant. He's part of the standard game - he
appears in ALL games of BG2. It's just that (1) he only appears at
certain times of day, and (2) often, one wouldn't think to look out
there, sandwiched into a comparatively small space between the outer
wall and the edge of the screen.

RCV: There are a number of these "night-time Fences" in town, besides
Jayes. There is a Black Market thief on the Bridge map near the "Mad
Dwarf's" house [by where the witch who sells potions also appears]. He is a
good source of potions and some nice scrolls, he also has a LOT of +2 Bolts.

Another Black Market Fence stands near the Temple of Ilmater on the roof
of the Copper Coronet, in the Slums district. In addition to him, there is
the "Fire Arrow Lady" over by Jan's home - she has a good sling, full plate
armor and those 30 sets of Fire Arrows....

All of the above, plus Jayes, can be stolen from, and its well worth
doing so. All have good [and expensive ] ammo and various other sundry
"consumables". A couple of Potions of Master Thievery and a brisk walk
around town after dark is highly recommended!

There are two Black Market thieves you can not steal from; the guy south
of the Harper's Hold on the Docks map [he has potions of explosions] and one
by the North gate of Trademeet. As with all the others, they ONLY come out
at night, so you have to be looking for them.

They are similar o the merchants who only come out during the day - like
the "potion" Witch and the "Healer" [near the Playhouse] on the Bridge
district and other various merchants who sell from "booths". Note too that
Maheer [the magical Horn guy" in the Promenade] changes position between
night and day....

There are two merchants who only appear under special circumstances as
well. The "Bullied Peddler" appears on the Gate district during the day,
once, the second time you go to the Gates. Handle his bully for him and he
will offer you some decent stuff, including some fairly rare scrolls. Buy
or steal what you can when you have the chance - he leaves, never to return,
once you have finished shopping....
The Rune Merchant appears on the Umar map, during the day, with the
other three merchants, once you have solved the Skinner Murders on the
Bridge district. Read a couple of unique books, get some potions of
Regeneration and Elixers of Health, and pump him for some information if you
can decipher his name from the scroll you found in the Tanner's house back
un the Bridge district....

Another merchant of note is Wallace, in Trademeet. He has some good
potions and stuff, but he will run away once Mazzy sees him during her
"poisoned sister" quest - so clean him out BEFORE that event is triggered.

Also re: Trademet, don't forget that all of the shops "work" once you
have dealt with the Genie problem. Some of them have excellent stuff, well
worth checking out, so don't forget to investigate all of them, even the
"lowly" Blacksmith, AFTER you have Ihtafer's head.....

Rich [who never steals from honest merchants - but who feels
stealing from Black Marketers is simply poetic justice....] 🙂

However, he appears to share an inventory with the merchant of
Brynnlaw. Which is to say, anything you buy or sell at the "cheap"
price, will have already been bought or sold from the Brynnlaw
merchant when you get over there to see him.

Possibly it's the same guy.

And once you've deciphered his name, he will no longer sell anything
to you, or have anything to do with you except concerning one of your
previous dealings in the Bridge District. You may make an incredibly
evil but useful suit of armour (I had a Half-Orc fighter/thief wearing
it - well, there's a set of "Orc Leather" for humans to wear, so it's
only fair...), or fight him. (If you make the armour you will end up
fighting him and his minions anyway.)

I've seen him return after that. He's not supposed to run away.

Not only do I steal from Black Marketeers, but if they accept stolen
items I'll sell the thing beforehand as well. (Note I don't sell
anything back to the person I stole it from, on the grounds that a
stolen item *should* be recognised by the person you stole it from
even though the game does not allow this. But I'm quite happy to sell
the same item to four or five different fences, once each...)

And just for the sake of completeness, isn't there also a fence in the
Sewers?

RCV: Yep but I was trying to keep my post to one's who change position
or only appear at certain times, but I didn't stay on track myself... ;-)

Roger the Fence is in the sewers beneath the Temple district and has 3
or more of every potion in the game, I believe. Has the rare ones too, like
Magic Blocking, Magic Protection and Storm Giant strength. I'm not sure if
he buys stolen items - I'll check some time tonight in one of my ongoing
games....

Yes, he does, and you can steal from him too.

instead of the sewers.... ;-)
