Big time noob psu question

Found an old antec psu in the garage & trying to see if it works. Plugged it into a wall socket & hit the switch & nothing happened. I thought the power cord was bad so I tried another one & got nothing again. I don't have another system to check it yet, but do I need to have the psu plugged into the wall & a mobo to see if it works? Is it some kind of loop? I know absolutely nothing about electrical.

If I do this can I just unplug after I'm done checking to see if it works & then remove the paper clip? Lol I don't want to get shocked with 650w!

if u have no experience of using or testing psu i would suggest you stay away from the paper clip method or you might cause major damage to psu or most importantly major damage to yourself. if u just want to check if it works use it with any of your friends pc or ask someone who has better knowledge of eletirical applicances to be with you.

All you do with the paperclip is to see if it turns on, then switch it off! You will not get shocked!
