Bigbruin.com give Volari V8 4.5 out of 5 stars

Sign of the Apocalypse? Or blatant idiocy? You decide!

My old 8500 would challenge it in alot of those benchmarks... 4.5 out of 5?
It didn't beat the plain-jane 9600 in a single app. And the 9600 is cheaper!

Did XGI rep's fellate the every last member of Bug Bruin's staff, or is there something I'm not seeing here?

I guess if you are willing to risk their drivers and have $100 budget and don't care to have the best gaming card for the money, then it's an OK option? Afterall it did beat that mighty FX5500! I am curious as to how clear the tv out is, but the noisy fan would ruin it's usefulness in a HTPC anyway.

It's insane. Even if you give the card props for it's HDTV output, why give it 4.5 out of 5 stars?

Hardware review sites should rate relative to the contemporaries. If you give the Volari 4.5 out of 5, what do you give the Vanilla 9600? 12 out of 5?

Call a spade a spade. The Volari V8 sucks feces as a gaming card, maybe it deserves a 3 out of 5 max because it actually works and offers a solid HDTV output, but for god's sakes... tell your readers that it's a very poor gaming choice, and to avoid it if they're gamers.

It's moron reviewers like this that make our jobs as informative forum urchins difficult...

When I read the title of your thread, I thought the reviewer gave it 4.5 out of 5 for badness.

Yeah, it's strange how they came to a 4.5 star conclusion on a noisy card that offers maybe FX5700le performance. They definately are not performance minded are they. Shoot, a 128-bit Radeon 9550 would be an obvious choice over that V8 for a big savings. And like the 9600, it's silent.

Or go back a generation and get a <A HREF="http://www.z-buy.com/product.asp?item=VG-M8870070" target="_new">Ti4200</A> for a steal.

Yeah it almost looks like they didn't read their own review and were handed the conclusions in advance;

<font color=purple><i>"proved itself to be strong competition for the nVidia FX 5500 OC and Radeon 9600 it was pitted against.
"</i></font color=purple>

Strong Competition for the R9600, not bloddy likely!

In most of these cases the reviewers only get the cards to review if they agree to give the card a favourable review. This practice is now barred from the big reviewers, but it's likely what is required for smaller reviewers like 'Big'Bruin.

And like Spitfire says, I think it deserves 4.5/5 BlackHoles not Stars for it's ability to suck in so many ways: suck money out of your wallet, suck power out of your system, and just plain suck in games.

It's like those car dealers who say that you will be receiving a manufacturers survey and we would appreciate all "5"s. That's what i was told when i bough the Town & County. "Here is our card to review...looking forward to your positive remarks and our continued close relationship."

Have you seen what's happened to Sysopt regarding review materials since I wrote a couple dozen critical reviews?

That sounds like a threat! It sounds like they're saying "If you want to continue to get good service from us, you'll do us this good service". As in "Give us positive marks or you might not like what happens at your next service visit".

Ah yeah sorry, I was making that one up to do with the Volari. The first half went with the Chrysler though.

No, I was going to mention you in jest, but didn't want to impugn your integrity even in jest, but it's amazing the pressure out there. I was curiously looking at the HIS reviewer requirements and noticed that they have to deem you worthy in order to get a test product. I have a feeling that if you were to right too many honest reviews instead of just glowing reviews, they may feel that they shouldn't expose their product to potential for unkinf (even if truthful) words.

I'll check out Sysopt tomorrow at work and do a little research. I personally enjoyed your R9600P-AIW review thought it was pretty thorough.

3Dcenter did a review of the DeltaChrome S8 and Volari V8, once again the V8 shows as CRAP. It's a german review so you'll need to translate it if you want to read it, but the charts and benchies are pretty simple and straight forward:

<A HREF="http://www.3dcenter.org/artikel/deltachrome_volari/" target="_new">http://www.3dcenter.org/artikel/deltachrome_volari/</A>

I was surprised to see the V8 is 4x2 design (similar to FX5800/5900) whereas I thought it was 4x1 based on those previous reviews. This makes it an even sadder case IMO.
