Hi!

I bought the ASUS K8N -SLI Deluxe secondhand and soon realise that it is perhaps not stable with XP. Some software installations crash. I decided to upgrade BIOS (as I have been successfull twice before). It seems that there are problems with this mobo
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us, search for SLI deluxe.

According to the instruction, I first update the chipset to version V6.65. The I use ASUS update utility (Windows) to flash the BIOS from a file (I did this way only before). I download the BIOS version 1015 (at the beginning, the BIOS version is 1006). Everything went fine and it asked me to reboot. I said Yes. Then the compoter reboot but the screen did not start ( the LED is not green). The CPU, all fan and even the CD-ROM is activated during the boot up.

So what has happened. Does it simply mean the mobo is dead.

Thanks

Yeah, that's pretty much what that means.

You can try one thing:

Check your motherboard for a "clear CMOS", "clear NVRAM", or "clear bIOS" jumper. If it has one, move the jumper so that it connects both pins (while the system is off). Turn it on (nothing will happen). Then turn it off. Then disconnect the jumper. Turn it back on and you might have video. When dealing with BIOS flashes, this rarely works. But it's worth a shot.

IF that doesn't work, RMA it. Just tell Asus it died. Don't tell them you tried to flash the BIOS.

Can you tell i've done this before?

Read your manual for CMOS clearing. First disconnect power cord, remove battery, remove jumper from the two pins on the 4 pin connector that sits just below the battery and place it on the next two pins. Leave it there for 5 seconds or so, then put the jumper back the way it was. Replace battery, plug in cord and try to boot.

Download the BIOS file for your mobo. Copy it to a floppy. Rename the file to the name provided by your manual for the Delux. For the Premium, the file name is: A8NSLI-B.BIN But the filename for the Deluxe may be different.

Put the floppy in drive, Boot your PC and hit ALT F2. It should automatically start and present you with the option to run the update using the BIN file on the floppy.

Hope this helps.
