Blind in Myanmar taught to read future
Associated Press
Yangon, April 4, 2005|18:49 IST
They may be blind, but handicapped students at one school in
Myanmar are being taught to peer into the future.
Twenty-five students at the Kyeemyindaing School for the Blind
have recently completed a new subject in the curriculum, astrology, a
semiofficial newspaper said Monday.
The six-month course, given in collaboration with the Myanmar
Astrologists' Association, will enable the students to make a living after
leaving the school, the Myanmar Times reported. Other subjects include
massage and cane-making.
Astrology is widely practiced in Myanmar, with people in all
strata of society, including the country's leaders, consulting their
favorite fortune tellers.
The newspaper said the students used special software to enter a
person's date, time and place of birth in a computer and then studied a
horoscope which is printed in Braille.
About 150 students are currently enrolled in the school, which
was founded in 1953.
