Working at Geek Squad do you have to have a large knowledge base regarding networking and software issue fixes?

Or can you work simply on the hardware end of things, I can dominate hardware issues left and right but then somebody comes in with a virus and doesn't want to lose their data, im S.O.L.

well u have to know a large majority of things

networking, hardware install, drivers issues, hardware failure

we have a Diagnostic that will tell the Agent ( geek squad employee ) whats wrong with a particular piece of hardware

As for viruses n stuff we back up there software with an external cd/hard drive its really easy

we use great software to figure out problems, makes the job less stress full

Cool, I am looking for a part time job and there is a Best Buy about 4 miles from my dorm. Hopefully they have part time employees, I have somewhat run out of a customer base for building PC's and want to keep messing with computers.

This gives our agents and precincts a terrible name.

Yes, given the System analyzer is a great BASIC tool, by no means is it gospel or even relatively thorough. Geeksquad isn't just having a customer walk in because they've received Virtumundo.c from limewire, or running the MRI PE and GScripts to pin down addressing issues.

What bench are you from? Any high performing bench will know out right it is easier and produces higher margin to have a talented agent go through and manually remove any traces or even migrate the hive.dll over to another account then to simply go through and rip the data/app data to a CD-R and kill the OS.

I don't know exactly what you see at your precinct but I wouldnt call going through and using a MM to test and re-solder surface mount caps on an emachines mobo so its not out DTV for 3 weeks easy. Nor is going through and tag teaming with johnny utah and telneting into a Mirra to kill the default CMOS password.

I personally love the company, living wages, great benefits, and all of the agents I happen to have at my bench are amazingly talented. Dont sell yourself short by saying your job is easy, the customer service portion is hell enough.

if you manage to break a tray on your optical drive, you've put way  to much stress on it, NEVER put stress on a computer part! always bad idea, so it's your own stupid fault. hopes your boss keeps the money off your paycheck

In our shop, a full cleanup (same price as BB) takes 8 hours to a day (including overnight). This is why most companies reinstall the OS in order to get rid of the spyware. Even good talent cant make up for time lost. However, companies also forget to factor in the amount of increased sales you aquire from references.... Besides, I hope a good tech be waiting to move on and leave best buy... because they dont belong.

-i forgot to add u have to know what you r doing, i ment its easy (to the agent)

At my precinct ( downey 872 ) we have highly trained people and i love working with them. I fix computers on the side for them when there busy helping customers and doing shipping, im an AV tech i deal with tall the electronics being shipped out to the service center and its a real pain i want to become a Cadet so i can do some real work, and maybe after that i can open my own shop 😀

Here is a question I asked one of my Geek Squad agents friday... almost word for word.

Me: Hay I have a old alienware laptop that I was hoping to get current. Can you sell me a new video card and install it for me? And how much would the labor be?

(This GSA was their leader)
GSA: Im sorry but laptops can not be upgraded that way. They are basicly a motherboard and thats it. If you want, we can design a new computer to go with the video card you are thinking of using.

Me: No, I want to do what I can to get my laptop upgraded.

GSA: Well we can always max out the ram on your computer. That should be enough.

Me: It is maxed out..

GSA: Hmm, well if you want we can send in your laptop to our corperate Geek Squad HQ and they can see what they can do.

Me: No. I guess I will just buy a new laptop.

Seee...... I hate this. They BS their way though the conversation in hopes you wont notice their ignorance. I would have respected a "Im not sure, but I can look that up for you" answer far more then an attempt to sound convincing. I hope your BB has more quality people.

I know what you mean. There are the people that will try to sound smart, and screw the customer over, and there are the genuine helping kind that don't get the respect they deserve.

I was at Best Buy getting a game or something, and naturally took a walk through the hardware to see if there were any open box/clearance items with good prices (sometimes there are.) I was near the video cards and heard the tech guy telling an older man that the Radeon X800 Pro was "the best card you can buy, and will run ANY game you throw at it on high visual settings." That made me laugh and I walked around the isle and saw they were asking somewhere around $340 for it. (still are) I looked and saw they had 7900GT's for $305 after a $25 instant rebate or something.

My friend picked up the 7900GT and we intercepted the guy on his way to the cashier and explained how it was the better card and was cheaper. He was very thankful and I think he should have bought me something.

That's an awesome story man.

I used to work for the Canadian counterpart, Futureshop. In IPG selling graphics cards and they forced me to sell crap that had a huge profit for them. Claiming it's the best since sliced bread. I quit because they were more interested in selling crap and having marginal returns than selling less but with lower returns and better rapport.

Stupid corporate box stores...

No I don't.

I'm aware of the company.

I misread the comment and thought it was being used in the context of being a zenith in quality. Not that they would switch brands 😛

Best buy has nothing to do with the quality of products. A sony there is the same as a sony on New Egg.

Very True, their terrible customer service and the general lack of knowledge of their sales people is the reason why they stink.

the computer sales people always come to us (geek squad ) for information

i got my weekly briefing on whats coming, its a giant packet we have to go through and read

today it was about windows vista

( alot of my fellow employees called it a MAC OSx rip off )

.....so true indeed

Thats funny, since if I recall correctly, a lot of OSX is borrowed from BSD on the back end.

I pulled that little fact out on a kid just a few minutes ago at lunch. He didn't believe me and said "I'm going to Wikipedia it" and I said bring it on 😛 He is a diehard Mac user btw.

uber_g breaking face plates left and right not giving a fcuk.

Sony is making crap now anyways. Ever since their batteries started blowing up they've been cutting corners to save their butts.

I wish I had access to a Blu-Ray so that I could flex my mad geek skills and snap it into bits 😉.

I agree, but I think it started a LONG time ago when Sony took over production of EverQuest. Seems odd I know, but if you ask anyone who played EQ from the get go, after Sony took over, it's gone down hill since.

As is the same with a number of other games *cough* The Matrix Online *cough* (there was a game that had a terrific idea, leave it to Sony to screw the players)
