Booting from a USB

I have the GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 Gigabyte motherboard. I'm trying unsuccessfully too boot from the USB. When I look at the bootable devices the only one that shows up is the HD. THere are no disk drives on the tower so don't worry about that. I'm wondering why I don't see the USB device or network device for that matter. I'm really confused and I couldn't seem to find a problem simillar enough to address this. Thank you.

What are you trying to boot?
Have you tried another USB?

check in BIOS , enable usb boot

The only thing that seems like "enable usb boot" is under fast boot - usb options - disabled, partial initial, and full initial. I've tried all of those.
