Brother HL-4070CDW Printer Keeps Going Offline

About 4 month ago I brought a Brother laser printer "HL-4070CDW," one of the best printers I've ever brought. My problem is every now and then the print will go offline. This happens for the two of three computers I have. Two of them having Windows 7 and the third having XP which is fine. When the printer goes offline I can not put in online again. The only way to do this would be to uninstall and reinstall it. After awhile this became a pain. If anyone knows a way to fix please I would like to know how. Thanks

2. Disable APIPA on the Brother printer. The option is found within the printer's settings under Network.

Disabling APIPA prevents the printer from assigning itself a local IP when its connection to the router is broken.

Have the same problem - the way round I've found is to switch the printer on before switching on the pc then it works - not very satisfactory 'cause if one forgets then one has to start the whole circus again..............

Oddly enough, I had a similar problem. Wi-fi Printing was ok but scanning was not. I did the reconnect procedures time after time to get it working. As soon as I rebooted the problem came back. It came back because I did not realize that the wi fi connection for printing connected first and then the scanner got hooked up. I just rebooted and immediately pressed the scan button and got check connection. Someone mentioned that if they turned on the printer first then the pc, it worked fine. I got to thinking that just maybe we were not waiting a bit before scanning OR printing. Perhaps the solution of turning on the printer before the pc only worked because time passed while the pc was booting, and the printer connected all of its multi function wireless devices.So, I rebooted and waited a minute or so and everytime it now works. So give the printer a chance to hook up. Mine does printer within a few seconds but there is the scanner driver that has to be given a connection. Also if you are running MULTI FUNCTION, set your printer as default start if you use printer more than scanner. If you use scanner more, set that for default start. Default starts first, then the next device. There will be a delay to use the second device on the list. IT REALLY DOES WORK!

As previously posted, the fix under windows 7+ is the stop/restart the spooler service. It's a windows issue, not the network or printer. And, it typically happens a lot with wifi connections, especially where the printer port is WSD.

a - in the your search pane (bottom left), type 'services' and open up the windows services app/control panel.
b - scroll down to the 'Print Spooler', right click, 'stop', then 'start'

no need to repower the printer, or set up a static address, which is a pain, as everything uses dhcp.

It happens to my Brother every day but I don't have to uninstall and reinstall. I simply unplug for 10 seconds and plug back in and wala, it's fixed. It's a PIA but an easy fix for now. It started when I upgraded to Windows 10, I don't think it works well with it.

I have read so many of these threads and run into one problem or another. We are assuming that everything else is functioning (ie. printer is turned on, internet is working, usb is connected, or wireless router is set to recognize printer, etc).

People own so many different types of computers so go to your Control Panel (however you know how from your PC / laptop). On the left hand side see how your control panel is organized (1 - Control Panel Home or 2 - Classic View).

If it is:

1) Control Panel Home:

a) Click on System and Maintenance (should be on the top left in Vista) >
b) Administrative Tools (at the bottom) >
c) Services (a pop up window opens so click CONTINUE) >
d) Find "Printer Spooler" (in alphabetical order) > Click Once > On the left hand side you will see "STOP" service and "RESTART" service. Click STOP and disconnect USB > wait a few seconds > Re-connect USB > Click START service. Check your printer status. It should be either "READY" or ONLINE.

I'm not sure if printer is connected wirelessly what needs to be done after "STOP". Try this method and see what happens.

2) Classic View: WINDOWS 10 VERSION:

a) You should see "Admnistrative Tools" straight away and the rest of the steps are as above.
b) Click Services (no pop up window)
c) Find Print Spooler
d) Click RESTART - ONLY
e) Printer goes back online!

Hope this helps no matter what version of computer, windows, printers you have, and how it is connected (USB vs. wireless)
