Hello everyone,

I read other threads related to the similar issue I am having, but unsuccessfully.

I built my own PC a few years ago for the first time, and it works fine unless I play a game (and the only game I play is The Sims 4).

Almost each and every time I play, I either experience (in order of frequency):

  • PC freezing, to the point that I have to manually reboot
  • BSOD but not always the same one and, checking WhoCrashed, mostly "ntoskrnl.exe" related
  • AppCrash (i.e. the game itself crashes)
This is my PC config:

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
BIOS: 12/04/15 20:19:28 Ver: 04.06.05 (type: BIOS)
Processor: AMD FX-8320E Eight-Core Processor (8 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM DDR3 (dual channel)
Available OS Memory: 16338MB RAM
Page File: 3369MB used, 15906MB available
Motherboard: ASRock 970A-G/3.1
VideoCard name: 2048 MBATI AMD Radeon R7 360 Series (Sapphire/PCPartner)
HDD: 465GB Seagate ST3500413AS ATA Device (SATA)
931GB Western Digital WD Elements 1042 USB Device (USB (SATA)
Audio: Realtek High Definition Audio
PSU: Thermaltake 530W modular

For the record, I don't have 3rd party antivirus

And this what I already tried to find a solution:

  • sfc /scannow: no integrity violations
  • chkdsk: no errors
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  • Windows clean boot
  • Checked RAMs, with both Windows diagnostic tool and MemTest86, and both didn't show any error
  • Updated Windows (Windows updates are always enabled by the way)
  • Updated GPU drivers
  • Uninstalled GPU driver with DDU.exe and reinstalled. It was even worse, hence I uninstall it again with DDU.exe
  • Checked both Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer. When the PC freezes, Reliability Monitor doesn't show anything helpful, while the Event Viewer shows the error ID 6008 "The previous system shutdown at __ on ‎__ was unexpected " 30/40 minutes before the freeze occurs, but at the same time of the error I am still actually playing.
Other attemps I made, game related: repaired the game, updated the game, removed and replaced the Mods folder by folder, played in a clean user data folder. But I honestly don't think the game is the original cause of the issue by now.

This is the link to the last 5 minidumps: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ToDnE9-kc2m2eZRFuBoSCESpZHMRTkAe

The only thing I have yet to try is a BIOS update, because it scares me and because I am using my PC for working remotely, hence I am afraid that if something bad happens I have no other way to work (my country is in lockdown due to COVID-19).

I also started to think that maybe could be my PSU? But just because I am running out of ideas.

Thanks so much in advance for any help provided.

csrss.exe = client service for user. Its the environment your user runs in.
that last error can be hardware or drivers

I feel we need to remove as many of these from startup to see if maybe they are cause

Dec 23 2013SmartDefragDriver.sysSmart Defrag driver (IObit) http://www.iobit.com/

can't do anything about AMD, but should be able to uninstall some of them. If you don't use them.

Speedfan should be okay

you can use a program called Autoruns to stop them loading at startup, if any programs need them they can still start drivers - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns

these files are way too old to be win 10 drivers and could be cause of BSOD.

You sure do have a lot of backup software. Acronis & EaseUS
I am wondering if its ram, even though it tested fine in memtest.

I don't trust myself with the paper-clip method 😳 , but I will check the BIOS. Is HWMonitor of any help in checking the PSU?

And are PSU Calulators a reliable tool to check if my PSU is enough?

Meanwhile, yesterday I experienced a BSOD (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1fB3_x8h7aRHVzU3LfriaRRa8rOoZ1C2p) and a black screen for a couple of seconds (but I could still see Windows' bottom toolbar), which I saw again today.
But most of all I had multiple freezes. It was a contast freeze and manual reboot, to the point that I gave up and left my PC turned-off. :(

It's really weird: I uninstalled SpeedFan or MiniTool Partition Wizard long time ago, but the drivers are still there? Which means there are a lot of "debris"...
Meanwhile, I used Autoruns to disable the aformentioned drivers (except for AMD). Finger crossed!
Just right before I disabled those driver, a new BSOD occured: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZGtWpX3lA3VYoXOAyBS_RyDi5_GjoQMf/view?usp=sharing :(

I wasn't aware speedfan would hang around like that. I use it myself but only to track temperatures, i let bios control fans.
I also tried to run DebugDiag.exe. I saved the report in the same file of the latest dump: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Opoj-sb2Jr_mje2WZ9Hlj4CTXV73XYXZ

call me slow but this report basically said the realtek Wireless lan drivers were cause at that time, as well as 2 files I am not sure about
0x772f1cbc
0x77e01cbc
neither of which come up with hits on google.

I just thought I back track and see if I missed anything.

Suddenly, it got worse.
2 BSOD today: the first one https://drive.google.com/file/d/15gh9kWn6lo5rbxGSlMaZoW64wpu5PVAo/view?usp=sharing forced me to manually reboot per usual, but the second one was the “inaccessible boot device” BSOD. 😭
Windows has been restored successfully though, I also run DISM and scannow. The latter found and corrected damaged files. Could the logs be useful in order to understand what happened?
And is there any way to detect and delete drivers no longer in use but still on PC?

I go no idea what caused winrar to crash,
The 2nd one is Windows defender. instinct tells me its the lan drivers
Feb 12 2020rt640x64.sysRealtek NICDRV 8169 PCIe GBE Family Controller driver

they aren't old but I have seen other people have problems with the Feb drivers. Newest are from April - https://www.realtek.com/en/componen...0-1000m-gigabit-ethernet-pci-express-software

if you click on this link and look at the drivers tab on any crash, it shows what was running at time of that crash and anything you don't use right now could be removed, The less drivers running, the less I can blame - https://cuspidalnewfoundland.htmlpasta.com/#

why is this still on here? It showed up as error on Thursday

Yes, we did, this is what I posted about it:
Meanwhile, I run the tests with the Seagate diagnostic tool. I run them all except for the repairing one and the Advanced Test (because a warning showed up that it could ruin the HDD itself). Hence, it checked SMART, the unity fast test, and both the fast and the the full generic tests. They were all succesful. I guess it means the HDD is still in ok condition?

I disabled again the aforementioned drivers, but is there away to safely uninstall the useless ones?
I am also installing again the LAN driver with the latest one (which is apparently the June update, at least that's what I see in the link @Colif posted above).
Meanwhile, the last 3 minidumps: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RbiARmnjQSsI5TkRr4caO22HSkHv5tY2/view?usp=sharing

remind me again which ones you mean?
Did you mean Tap0901? I can find websites that want me to dl some tool to remove it, nope. Seems some places classify it as malware. Have you run an antivirus scan?

SOLVED
  • Step 1: Download OpenVPN and install with ALL features from HERE : https://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/downloads.html
  • Step 2: Open CMD.exe as administrator and go to the file location of "C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\bin" or whatever that turns out to be.
  • Step 3: Follow the "Installing and uninstalling TAP-drivers" section from the website HERE : https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/ManagingWindowsTAPDrivers
  • OR JUST READ BELOW
  • Step 4: How to get the <id> for the next section:
    • Go to Network Connections
    • Right click the TAP device you want to remove
    • Click Properties
    • Click Details
    • Using the drop-down menu, get the Hardware ID
      • This is usually something like: tapoes, tap0901 etc
  • Step 5: Remove those suckers by typing the following into CMD: tapinstall.exe remove (ID from step 4)
    • it should look something like this below:
tapinstall.exe remove <id>
ROOT\NET\0000
1 device(s) were removed
  • Step 6: If you have devices that were not removed, repeat Steps 4-5 for all TAP adapters
  • Step 7: Restart!
  • Step 8: Uninstall OpenVPN and you're all set!

Yes, I did run again an antiviurs scan last week, but nothing was found.

Maybe "disabled" is the wrong term, sorry. I meant that, with Autoruns, I removed the check mark from the following drivers: rsdrvx64.sys, pwdrvio.sys, WsAudioDevice_383S(1).sys, speedfan.sys and SmartDefragDriver.sys (besides, both Speedfan and MiniTool Partition Wizard are no longer installed, but the drivers are still there).

I left the check mark on amdiox64.sys and amdide64.sys.

I can't uninstall tap0901.sys because, otherwise, CyberGhost stops working (I tried). But it still seems to work if I remove the check mark from tap0901.sys on Autoruns.
Anyway, I uninstalled it and CyberGhost installed it again, the version is TAP Windows 9.21.2 but no idea if this is the latest.

To be fair, I experienced those issues even when the VPN was not running (for instance, when I play games).

So far , today, "only" one freeze, but no BSOD.

I have yet to find any solution. So far -though not everyday, as lately I barely have the time to turn my computer on- I experienced a couple of freezes, both when VPN was not working. The only software still open were Chrome, Foobar2000 (I was listening to some music) and Excel.
Meanwhile, though, my WiFi adapter started to act weird. I already had a new one, hence I uninstalled the TP-LINK one with all its drivers and replace it with the current one, which works only with the Realtek drivers. I will let you know if, perhaps, for some reason this change solved the issue, but I don't want to raise my hopes up.

reminding self what you have.

I haven't had a normal month this August so I am not really with it right now. My GPU died 2 weeks ago and it was in the week before I got a new PC, so I was just unable to reply for a few days and I fell out of the loop.

I am not sure if you have or we suggested a clean install as that could remove problem drivers. If you have clean installed, it is likely to be a hardware problem of some kind

I know you said you would run seatools (seagate test) but I not sure if you did.
GPU passes tests.
memtest passed.
PSU difficult to test.
CPU - Only real test available is Prime95, will test ram and CPU
Motherboard impossible to test. Only way to test MB is to test everything else works on another motherboard.

Did you post on Tenforums? I know I suggested it on page 1 of this thread.

And are PSU Calulators a reliable tool to check if my PSU is enough?
not really. They tell you what your system needs but cannot actually tell what PSU is delivering. They are more for potential purchases, not current situation. They could tell you if your PSU is under powered, if the number they suggest is above what you have. But they can't see actual circumstances

How old is hardware? I mean, I can tell a FX CPU isn't new but if its getting on in age, its when things start to just break out of wear and tear. It is one reason I got a new PC last month, I knew something was bound to go sooner or later and I was right, GPU dies week before making PC I am on now.

Gardenman said he was converting those files for you so I will look at them when he does.

Hi @Colif , no problem at all, life should always come first. Hope everything's ok, computer aside. :)

Yes, I did run the Seagate tool tests and HDD passed them all, the only tests I didn't run were the advanced ones, because the software suggests the HDD might have issues afterwards.

I also run Prime95 and it actually "happened" something, although I don't know if it is useful or not: when it was running, I experienced a BSOD twice. These are the related minidumps: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1skWFbXFXlBqIoOeMpCZ4wEJhkEysu9r2/view?usp=sharing

At the third attempt, I finally managed to run the tests: I saw there were some errors, even though I have no idea what they mean. The Prime95 results: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15KP8X2-BywYQaboH3DW8_iJYPmIP5LTH/view?usp=sharing

I have yet to try a clean installation of Windows 10 because I need my computer everyday and I don't want to reinstall everything again, it would be too time consuming... maybe I could try a repair if necessary, but is it safe?

Thank you!
