going to be using this for daily use , surfing , chatting, facebook, movies etc. no games . need some opinions. doesn't matter if its intel or amd. i just wanna get the fastest for the build. i would prefer newegg or microcenter. and the only things i don't need is mouse and keyboard and os. i would appreciate your help thank you.

Probably better to use dual channel ram now . Theres little chance of needing an upgrade and by then DDR3 will be so cheap just replacing with a larger kit is not a problem.
The case looks cute . But the power supply is a turkey . Definitely doesnt have a place in a modern computer

So heres how I would revise my original suggestion taking in to account daily deals and some of the other suggestions in this thread. Even provided links

That is a good deal , but the OP needs a monitor too .

EDIT: If you have a 64 bit OS then consider dropping the graphics card to a lower spec model , and using the money you save on a 2 x2 gig kit of RAM . If its 32 bit you are good as it is

That GPU seems like overkill if youre not gaming and motherboard integrated graphics might not cut it for Blu Ray etc. I would suggest going with i3/H61 to take advantage of the decent integrated graphics on the i3-2100.

If you can bump the budget up to around $430 you can get this:

i3-2100
2x2GB G.Skill NS
ASRock H61M-VS
Seagate Barracuda 500GB
Antec Basiq BP350 350W
Rosewill R102-P-BK
SAMSUNG CD/DVD Burner
Hanns·G 20'' Monitor

That comes to $427.92 before shipping and you should see big improvements over the Athlon and 2GB RAM I think.

@ outlander -

1. None of your links are going anywhere.

2. The Propus range costs not more than a few dollars over the Ranas. And the 440 you "tried" to link is OEM, meaning it doesn't come with HSF.

@ blud -

If you want 4GB, get a single stick rather than 2X2, so that when the time comes, you'll still get to upgrade to 8 by just sticking in another single 4GB stick without having to throw away the current ones.

And for non gaming needs, on-board gfx will be plenty good. If you absolutely are in the mood to spend $$$ on it, get a 4650 or something - max.

EDIT- jmsellers posted while I was posting myself. I like his build, actually. Just swap out the Hanns-G for Samsung/LG/Asus/Acer/Dell/Viewsonic anything.

I did say they were not going to work . When you cut and paste from one thread to another this always happens .
Im not sure why you bothered to mention this , since I already had .

As also pointed out [ by me and others ] the graphics card is stronger than needed for this build , and this is the thing I would compromise .

The X3 Athlons with higher clocked cores are probably more appropriate to this build than a slower clocked quad at the same price .
The build is based on high quality components that will have a long life .Just what the OP needs .
The monitor selection was made pretty much on size . There were plenty of $99 18.5 inch or 19 inch monitors . I'd always go for a bigger screen and since the 20 inch fits the budget its a deal .
And it fits the budget of $400 .



If the budget was higher then the intel builds based on the i3 2100 are clearly superior . They will run cooler and they will run faster . But I cant see the point in ignoring the OP's budget . If we do that then I doubt we are being that helpful

@ OP squirrel's combo is an absolute steal. But adding a standard 1600 X 900 20" monitor will increase your budget substantially.

Try this -

CPU: $100 AMD Athlon II X4 640

Mobo: $55 ASUS M5A78L-M LX. AM3 ready.

RAM: $26 CORSAIR XMS 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM. Plug-&-play DDR3 CL9. No manual BIOS settings. Single stick to accomodate future upgrade to 8GB if & when desired.

HDD: $40 Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM

ODD: $20 Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner SATA Model with LightScribe Support.

Case+PSU: $60 COOLER MASTER Elite RC-310 ATX Mid Tower Computer Case, Elite 460W Power Supply

Monitor: $130 SAMSUNG 20" LED BackLight LCD Monitor.

$430+ negligible shipping (maybe). Quality components with upgrade room. Get the Haans-G if you wanna save a further 30 bucks.

You've got lotsa choices already. Start asking questions :)

The x3 because the computer wont be doing heavy multitasking that an x4 would be better at .
dual channel ram for added speed
a dedicated graphics card to take graphics load off the system ram
a power supply with active pcf and high efficiency
the cheapest 20 inch LED back lit LCD
