I have took a look around the forums and have done some research. I think that now I know enough to be dangerous.
I am looking to build a new computer and looking to see what you all think and if you have any suggestions. I'll use the copy and paste template that was on one of the forums.
Approximate Purchase Date: It'll be either in September or October.
Budget Range: No real amount - what I have right now is about $1,200 (not including monitor) (think this is after rebates, but again - doesn't matter)) I am willing to move up from this if it's in reason. I can't be convinced to buy a $1,000 CPU or GPU. I like to buy a new computer every three years so that time is up.
System Usage from Most to Least Important: This will be a gaming rig. Also looking to possibly hook it up to a 52 inch flat screen to watch hulu, nextflix, etc - basically replace my cable (other than internet).
Are you buying a monitor: Yes - looking for suggestions on this one.
Parts to Upgrade: RAM, Graphics Card, Motherboard, CPU, and possibly the hard drive, CD, and power supply if my current ones will not work or are good idea to upgrade.
Do you need to buy OS: No - I have windows 7 - though this template notes "if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard" - how will that work?

Parts Preferences: Nvidia, corsair, intel.
Overclocking: Maybe - see below with my part information and why.
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe - same as above.
Your Monitor Resolution: Currently my max on this monitor is 1440x900. Would like to upgrade - need suggestions. Would like maybe 22 inch monitor - 1920x1080?
Additional Comments: (proposed build is below all this information) Currently, I am running a Gigabyte LGA 1366 motherboard with an i7 960 Bloomfield. So those both must go. Mouse, keyboard, speakers are not needed.
Used to have an radeon HD 5870 but wasnt handling games too well anymore, so I actually just recently upgraded to an GTX 650 TI Boost as a band aid to keep me going. I know this isnt going to be able to run the new games coming out at max settings plus a nice resolution (Total War Rome II, Battlefield, Watch_Dog). Now, I was looking at the pros and cons of high end cards vs SLI mid range card. Seems SLI has a lot of issues, power, and cooling, so I believe right now I am going to go with one high end card. Therefore, I am looking at the GTX 770.
For the CPU, I have been looking at the Haswell vs, what appears to be the great CPU for gaming, i5-3570K. From what I am reading, seems the Haswells are not that great right now. I understand that LGA 1155 is going the wayside to the new 1150 for Haswell and...the one after that. But from what I understand, doesnt seem it's worth it right now. I can always upgrade the motherboard and CPU later if something comes a long that will really change it.
Right now I am not looking to overclock, but it's something I would like to learn. So I figure get the 3570K, then when I am up for it I can start playing with it. Also, if it's at a point that the 3570K is subpar, I would feel OK with messing it up as I wont be using it.
Motherboard - new one I am looking at only has one PCI express 3.0 slot - that is fine - I do not plan on running SLI and by the time I do, I figure I will be at the time i need to upgrade to an LGA 1150 board anyway so I can get more 3.0 slots.
OK - for my current components looking to possibly keep:
Hard drive - I never come close to filling it up. Any reason to upgrade it? I dont have any complaints about it.
