I am building a new PC and I am stuck between wether to go for an intel or AMD system. Idealy I want a i7 system but the cost is still so high. The alternative is a mid-range Intel system or a high-end AMD system. Here is my major concern:

What are the possibilities of future upgrades with each of these CPUs. Will there be more CPUs released on the AM2+ / 775 sockets??

it seems like both of theses are coming to the end of their lifespan and only really leaves the 1366 route.

Could anybody please give me some idea of the best route.. thanks!!!!

UPDATE

I have looked around and come up with this system. Please let me know what you think and any replacements you would make. Particularly the monitor. I was also not sure whether to get this graphics card or a XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 for £10 more. and is this mobo any good?

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM - £229.99

Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £163.99

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 "Toxic" 512MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) £155.99

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant Power Supply Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant Power Supply £76.99

OCZ 6GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 Gold Low-Voltage Triple Channel Kit (3 X 2GB) (OCZ3G1333LV6GK) £69.99

Tell us how much money you have and what the PC will be used for.

In general, LGA1366 and AM2+ still have a chance of seeing new CPUs released in the future. LGA775 doesn't. That is, an i7 920 or Phenom II build will be upgradable in two years, while a Q9550/E8500 build won't.

Of course, you never know. If the X58 boards remain expensive and the economy keeps going down, Intel might very well abandon i7 and start making new CPUs for LGA 775 again.

Yes AM3 Socket is available, but not practical. AM2+ is a better option for the price. The only difference is DDR3 Ram, which shows very little improvement over DDR2.

Thanks for the replies everyone..

To answer aevms question, I want he computer for general use, some gaming and light multimedia work. considering things are soooo expensive over here in the UK its hard to build a top notch system with monitor for under £900.

When do you think the i7s will take a price cut over here??

If you can upgrade to the 1024MB version do it. It will add about 10% to the speed, for about 6% more money.

If you can upgrade to Corsair TX 750W it's a good idea IMO, because it has 4 PCI-E connectors and you would need 4 if you want a second video card later.

You don't really need that Akasa cooler, unless you want to overclock for fun. For what you described, overclocking makes no sense for you because that CPU will never be used at max even at stock.

Prices are pretty comparable in the UK to the US if you consider the exchange rate. i7's probably wont have a price cut until Q3/Q4 of this year when the newer i7's get released.
