buy a GTX 280 or wait for DX11 card ?

i want to upgrade my platform...
maybe i want to build a new one..
i have made a choice to buy the GTX 280, but
i heard that DX 11 is about to come out..
what do you think ? is it good if i buy it or i have to wait ?

and.... if i just upgrade my VGA card.. my procesor is E6400.
will it bottleneck ?

What's your current video card?

If you want to get a temporary video card, which is currently the best bang per buck ratio. Then get the Radeon 4850. It could cost as low as $130 is you know where you're looking.

And by benchmark results it a good match to the NVidia 9800GTX+.

If your worried about future DX releases then obviously getting a DX10 only card would be a bit silly at this point but getting an ATI card with at least DX 10.1 support would at least give you some benefits. I dont know when DX11 will show its face or if when it does it will be as bad as DX10 was compared to DX 9 IE not much differance. The only thing i can recomend you do is research When its due, remember we are only just getting games that support DX10.1 so just because its released dont mean it will be usefull. And research what the benefits will be.

It took over a year after DX10 was released before any games actually started to use it. And then, the DX10 cards on the market that people grabbed up at first release for a huge premium were barely able to run it.

For less than couple hundred bucks, man a 4850 would literally smoke the card you have now, big, big time.

Can you overclock that 6400 any? I don't really think there is any need to buy more than a 4850 with that processor, at 2.1ghz, it is going to be holding you back. But right now, that 1950 is your biggest problem.

4870x2 outperforms gtx280 in nearly everything. For that matter, 9800gx2 outperforms gtx280 in nearly everything. Gtx280 is overpriced and overrated.

x1950 is really getting old if you want to play the latest games. Dx11 is still a while off. You might consider getting a stop-gap card for use until then. A $520 4870x2 will probably be too much for a stop-gap card, although a $280 9800gx2 might make sense.

I vote wait for DX 11. And periodically report back to us on how that wait is going. I'll be waiting to heard back from you with abated breath. That could be difficult, as I'm sure it will last a good while (particularly as measured by the gfx world standards), but I am up for a challenge.

DX11 comes out spring 2009 I reckon, based off nothing but an educated guess. I would wait because DX11 wil play DX10.1 like a hot knife through butter. If you wanna buy now keep in mind any product now will be out of date within 4-5 months. Which is shorter then your normal 6-8 months lifespan.

get what you can now and enjoy, tech changes drastically. when you get dx11 card next yr dx12 will be out? or better yet ray-tracing.

It's going to be a year before you see many DX11 games.
Why put your life on hold?

And Yes, your E6400 will hold back top end cards unless you OC it.
You should be able to hit 3.2Ghz w/o a problem and likely more.
This should be sufficient in most cases.

i got a plan to build that computer, but still using my old X1950XTX and wait for the DX11..

well in 2 months with the release of the new Nvidia cards, you can buy a cheaper 280 and if you don't like it, in 100 days you pay a little more and get top of the line....so understand that

I waited and waited and waited for ati to come out with a good card. When they did i purchased the 4870. 2 month's later I bought a gtx 260 to replace it because it wasn't as good as claimed and wasn't worth the wait. If you want the card buy it. Remember also that like DX10, even when DX11 comes out, games will support both for a while, (they still do atm for dx10 supporting dx9 because its so unpopular to upgrade for some gamers) that waiting for a first wave DX11 card would mean 3 things...

1. High Price, when 8800s first came out as the first dx10 cards, they were $600+, now they are <$200, and this is the time where most games are going DX10. Games wont support DX11 exclusively until the market supports it with cheaper GPUs. You can bet the first wave of DX11 cards wont get used to their full potential for a while

2. Current series in ATI are extremely top notch in price / performance, it wont get this good again for a while

3. DX11 will come out bugged and broken like the first DX10 games, guaranteed. Going strait for it in the first 6 months of release is foolish when no games will support it for a while and when they start, they will under utilize DX11 and probably be buggy, while supporting DX10, and being mostly unplayable on the first wave DX11 cards. So just go DX 10.1, its going to be the main standard for the next generation of games and will last a while.

DX 10 wasn't bugged, the whole issue was the Vista optimizations...not even DX9 performed the way it was supposed to.

I don't kno where your getting we will never see these prices again from, during the 8800 Killer years, the 8800 GTS 320 dropped from 450$ to 300$ in 3-4 months after release.

Which for its time was a god send, since most cards topped off at 400, even the 1950 XTXs.

Honestly you can't predict the market. Look @ dx 10.1 cards, they just came out are the 600$??? no they start at 150$!!!!! What makes you think DX 11 will do the same???

The real answer to this question can't be solved by any1, it all revolves around the money, patience and type of performance/eye candy the OP wants.

Whats the lesson? waiting is always better than rushing in head deep, ppl saying buy buy buy, is like whats happeneing in the economy now in North America, OMG houses are cheap now, buy buy buy...money is at all time low, banks want their money back the ppl have none to give em.

Don't rush into a purchase, if you do have a back up plan...with the ATi cards so far if you go with them you better not regret it, because I don't think there is a step up plan where you can exchange in 3 months.

If you do go with ATI though you'll have top end price/performance for this year...

So there are many roads you need to see. Honestly I'd say wait and see what new years brings, unless your like me and change cards every 3-4 months.

If it were me, and I would go with the 4870 X2, but most ppl would tell you to go for the 4870 since its cheap and it is less of a hassle.

Honestly its up to you...you can always have 1 4870 and then down the road buy another 4870 or and 4870 X2 and sli them

The 280 GTX is a beast card, but the price you pay for it kinda closes the door on the card.

If you have the patience that I sure as hell don't I'd wait till near Xmas or just get a temp crappy card for now, prices will only go down for these current cards. And really it doesn't take much to play whats out now, 1 8800 GT still is pulling it's weight, (4850 seems to be the gaming standard though now)

So really its all about will power now, if you feel like waiting a bit and having more of a selection.

buy in 1-2 years means you'll enjoy DX11 eye candy when it doesn't really matter much now does it

I agree that DX11 isn't a high selling point, but don't forget that the cards themselves from both ATI and Nvidia will be stronger.

The Ati X1950XTX is still a good card for playing games in DX9. Since you seem to be willing to spend the money though I'd say go with a Radeon 4850. A faster card probably won't benefit you much right now unless you're using a rather high resolution. If you want more power than that then instead of getting a 280 you would get more benefit by getting a Radeon 4870 and using the difference in price to upgrade your CPU and perhaps your motherboard if you have anything less than a decent P45 board.

If you don't want to replace your board and CPU then consider overclocking it to get the most benefit out of your new GPU.
