Hello,
I need some advice for upgrading my gpu.
AT the moment i game on a 1070 ti/ ryzen 5 5600x 1080p. I plan to upgrade my monitor and gpu to play games at 2k 144 hz resolution for The next 3 years or so.

At the moment, prices în Europe and în my country are still insane for gpu-s, nothing 3080 quality or above îs în my budget range (new), i cant afford to spend more than 700-750euro so i have a big dilema how to properly future proof my setup.

Options :
1. rtx 3080 used, with warranty, possibility to phisically test it before buying for 550 euro
2.RX 6800 xt /rx 6900 xt for 750 euro used, warranty and test it before
3.Wait for rtx 4070 ti and hope its below 800 euro
4.Wait for rx 7800xt and hope its under 800 euro

I can build the setup no more than late March next year, but i am afraid that most people dump their gpu-s now to upgrade to next gen, and în March second hand prices might actually ingrease.

Regarding raytracing, i would like to try it also, but its not mandatory

No foreseeble upgrades în the future, so this îs a big decision for me, will exclusively play on 2k 144 Hz , i dont care about 4k gaming.

Any thoughts please?
Thank you

the 3080 is a beast of a GPU and a good buy used if you can get one. I recently upgraded to the 4080 and I game at 144hz 1440p the truth is I really didn't need to and while there is a difference it wasn't worth what I paid. and that price for the 3080's performance is insane I paid double that when I came out just to get one

Yea i was thinking that as well.
Mostly i was leaning toward rx 6950xt used because it will only be used 6months,compared to 3 years the rtx 3080 îs. Also 16gb memory i think it will hold a lot better în 3 years than 10gb from 3080. Basically i will buy a used, like new, rx 6950 xt, for 150 euro more than a 2.5year used rtx 3080, îs IT worth it?

I stopped the deal on rtx 3080, it was a single fan version, did a little research and noticed they are a terrible version for a 3080. Anyway, now the main question is: 6950xt for 750 euro or wait for 7800xt, which is rumored to be 30-40% faster than 6950 xt, for a price anywhere between 700-900 euro?

The 6900xt is nearly on par with a 3090 now a days, a 6800xt is faster than the 3080 non TI in pretty much everything, and the 4070ti is going to be probably nearly double the price of the 6900xt. I had the 6800xt, and recently moved to a 3080ti, my 6800xt was just ever so slightly worse than the 3080ti, quite impressive.

Now with Nvidia, Of course you have DLSS and Nvidia also works with AMD's FSR, Where AMD only works with FSR. Ray tracing performance is of course better on Nvidia by quite a margin, and Nvidia's encoder seems to be less problematic with recording software in my opinion.

If it was me between a 3080 and a 6900xt, I'd go for a 6900xt any day of the week. If you look up any recent benchmarks with updated drivers, AMD got quite a big jump in the recent months.

Good Luck!

If you like to try out raytracing, you can go for the 3080. You will be able to really use raytracing at 1440p with that card.....especially when combined DLSS. So for the price, I think the 3080 is absolutely worth getting if you don't want to spend 1000+. You could wait for the 4070Ti, but who knows how much it will be. $899? maybe $799? Maybe they surprise it (doubtful) with $699? We will find out in three weeks. But $550 for the RTX 3080 is not bad....especially for 1440p....

There is no way a 7800xt will be 30 to 40% faster the the 6950xt. The 7900xt is only about 16% faster than the 6950xt in average. The 7900xtx is about 33% faster. Don't know who told you that that a 7800xt would be faster than its bigger siblings.....

my guess would be that a 7800xt would be on a 6950xt level......maybe, but with better ray tracing...

Hello,

I am looking for a bit of advice regarding purchasing a GPU to replace my 4y old 1070 ti for 1440p gaming.
I am looking to get a good card to be able to play at high refresh rate 1440p, but i am on a tight budget, the most I am willing to pay is 750 Euro

Right now in Europe, I got limited options:

  1. RTX 3080 for 600 euro used for 2-3 years, with limited warranty
  2. RX 6950 XT used for a few months, with 2.5-3year warranty, for 750-800Euro, with the ability to test in person the card before buying, for performance, coil whine and so on.
  3. Wait in 2023, no later than March, for release of RTX 4070 TI or RX 7800 XT, with hopes that it will cost under 800 Euro, and it will beat the RX 6950 XT to make the purchase worthwhile.

I literally have no idea what to do, i search daily for deals on RX 6950 XT and I am not sure if its the best decision to pull the trigger now or wait a few more months.

PS: -
-I can wait a few months if needed, its set in stone i want to upgrade my GPU, but its not urgent, at least not until March
-I don't do anything like rending/editing on my PC outside of gaming and content consumtion, in the future I will be doing IT stuff on it, not sure if GPU is even important for those tasks, like running scripts and what not, I am 99% sure its not but i might be wrong
-I don't really care too much about raytracing, i would rather play a game at 2K 165 fps than 2k 80-100 fps with RT on

All opinions are highly appreciated.

Cheers !

I recently bought a 7900 XT but as its not installed yet, I can't really comment on how good it is.
I wanted to replace my 2070 Super with a card that could run 1440p at the refresh rate you mentioned, 7900xt does that.
I have no intention of using 4k (again, I have had a 4k monitor already) so I didn't need an XTX.

A little tired of all the reviews only having reference cards or XTX. I realise XT isn't great value but it still exists... reviews would be nice that didn't only say XTX is better and the price is too high... that is opinion, doesn't tell me anything about my card.

I got a Powercolor Red Devil 7900 XT

If you can wait, you might as well. It might get cheaper, I can't forsee future.

7900 xt might be bad value compared to XTX but here, I can get one of those for $1000 less than a 4080 so its all relative. XTX are like 4090 in a way (not performance wise) in that they exist in theory but you very lucky to find one in a store. So of the top cards, 7900 XT at least exists in stores and is cheapest of them.

Don't buy 6950xt it has terrible power efficiency even though it was a beast previous gen but anything new gen is better than that. I'd say wait until March to see what options open up.

I had set my mind on XTX with high expectations but now I know it is not the right product for me, will still hang onto my seven years old GTX 970.

With those options I would wait, if you could get a new 3080 or 6950XT for €700ish that would be worth it but used at those prices is too much. The 7800XT should be around €700-750 and be on the same performance roughly as the 6950XT, I doubt the 4070Ti will be worth it given the specs we know from when it was the 4080 12GB.

Hello,
I am in the process of upgrading my PC, just need the GPU now and i`m done.
Using a ryzen 5 5600x, 16 gb ddr4 3200 mhz on a B550 case with a 1070 ti atm, with a 2k display 165 hz, without prospects of playing 4k or with raytracing in the foreseeble future.

I live in Europe, and the GPU prices are still insane here: RX 7900 XT sells for 1.2k euro, xtx for 1.4k, rtx 4080 for 1.6k , and in my country/amazon i dont see the prices for 3080 ti/ 6950 xt drop under 800 euro used / 950 euro new.
I was thinking about waiting for 4070 ti or rx 7800 xt, but 4070 ti has an announced msrp of 850, so i guess it will cost around 1k euro, and rx 7800 xt will probably still cost around 800-850 euro.

Meanwhile, i found a nice deal on a RX 6800 XT, 500 euro used for 2 years, guy is super friendly, he agreed to bring the card to me to test it in my own pc tomorrow, so thats that.

Considering i will play only at 1440p for the next 2-3 years, should i take the deal for RX 6800 xt (Reference model triple fan) if the board passes all tests, or i should i wait until march to maybe buy something new at similar/better performance for a bit of extra cash?
