Buzzing / High Pitch scratching noise coming from PC

Okay well, I've just build myself a new PC and it's started buzzing.

I've followed tutorials on how to change the power saving options which has minimized the buzzing but I want to know WHY the buzzing has been happening and if there is something that could fix it besides using the power saver fix.

Okay well it's definitely not my GPU and it doesn't sound like it's coming from my PSU at all. It's not my ram and it sounds like it's either my CPU or Mobo. The sound is (without my speakers plugged in) very high pitched beeps but they aren't very loud. Can hardly hear them but as soon as I plug my speakers into my mobo because I don't have a soundcard the digital buzzing / scratching / beeping comes through my speakers and is very annoying. It doesn't matter how low the volume on my amp is the sound comes out at the same volume. Now, I've tried the Power settings fix that some people use and it does get rid of the sound but as soon as I play a game (even with the fix) the horrible sound comes back 🙁

sounds like you have the front header cables or a lot of the power cables next to the mb sound chipset and it picking up the noise of the mb. also did you use all the mb standoff and screws...a badly grounded motherboard will also have electrical noise.
 
Not sure I get this but I've moved the cables as far out of the way as possible.. (you have the front header cables or a lot of the power cables next to the mb sound chipset)

I've tried re-positioning the mobo but it's still happening. I'm scared I'll break the mobo if I *** about too much :/
 


Neither one of those is it. The same thing happens with my Asus mobo (though I don't think it's brand specific). The post that Synatics linked hit the nail on the head about what it is (mobo VRM's). It's VERY quiet, though. (seriously, I have to put my ear right up next to the mobo to hear it), and VERY high pitched (almost out of my hearing range). Using High Performance in Windows fixes it for me though (in games and everything else).

It's really not annoying enough for me personally to worry about though, but it is for some.
 
I should add that I have a dedicated sound card too, and never have use the onboard sound, so I haven't experienced any issues with it coming through the headphones/speakers.

I read in reviews that my board, in particular, had that problem, so I just use a sound card to avoid it.
 
I think I'll take it to a PC repair shop today because they will have what they need to run proper diagnostics - So annoying I don't have spare components lying around to run tests.

One thing though, the noise wont come through my headphones for some reason (it's not that the other line out is faulty because I've tested it)
 


Nothing's actually wrong (or at least I don't think so). It's just a relatively common thing with certain motherboards.
 
My PC wont stop buzzing! It's not environmental e.g. mains power and even when I put in a new soundcard the sound still continues. The sound is directly effected by processing power e.g. turning round on skyrim makes the sound go worse while the world is loading.
 


See, that's the thing, I'm not sure it's the PSU. IMO, it's the mobo. If it IS, there's not really anything wrong or a reason for an RMA because it would almost definitely be the same with a replacement of the same model.

Coil whine is much louder than what the OP is describing.
 
It's defo not the GPU, it's not very loud.. I'd deal with it if my amplifier didn't amplify the noise even when it's in a soundcard! In fact you can hardly hear it if it doesn't come out of my speakers.

I might give a different PSU a try but I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the mobo. I mean surely coil whine from my PSU wouldn't come through my soundcard?
 
I've tried disabling c-states etc.. still makes the whine when doing anything hard like playing games.

About 99% it's either the processor or the mobo..
 
It doesn't seem to be the motherboard. I just bought a new one and tried it.. still seems to make a similar noise. If the PC isn't getting enough power, might it make a continuous beeping/scratching noise?

So tempted to just chuck my PC away..
 


Different make and model of mobo, or the same? If it's a totally different make and model, I guess it really could be the PSU, but the noise should be coming from the PSU, and not anywhere else, in that case. Plus, what you're describing doesn't really fit "coil whine", IMO. Too quiet, unless you're underestimating it.

On the other hand, if it was the same make and model of mobo, it doesn't surprise me at all.
 
It was a different make and model. I took it to the PC store and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. All my parts seem to be working fine and have passed all the tests they did in store. I have a feeling that it could be a power issue but I really don't know any more.

Will try setting the PC up somewhere else in the house. So unlucky if it works and I have to watch porn in the kitchen from now on.
