Did you really just use a Matrix reference for talking about real life? And what does IQ have do do with what gaming platform you play on? I mean, really?
I mainly have a PC gaming background since the early 90s and where my heart is, but have owned most consoles since the NES, but always went back to my PC. But you can't ignore the impact consoles have had on gaming as a whole. Also just think about all the game IPs that have only been on consoles, or got there start there. Most of my gaming for the past 5 years has been on my PS3 I bought five years ago. Would I love to have a gaming rig right now, yes. But is it necessary for my life and well being, no.
Developers go where the money is and pretty much always have. Just about all companies (whatever they sell) go where the money is. Since you bring up percentages , I would probably say the ENTIRE gaming community is about 70% (consoles) - 30% (PC Gamers). So, if it was you, where would you be putting your money? Also, with the iteration of the PS3 and Xbox 360, people like myself who would call themselves "PC elitists" could get away with what these consoles offered. Never thought I would see that day I played an FPS with a controller (Medal of Honor was great on the PSX though), but I got over myself, and have just as much fun as I did with my PC.
I wanted to go somewhere else with this, but I don't want to rant. Long and the short of it, consoles will always be around. Most people just want to play games and not have to worry about sitting at a desk (want to relax on the couch), worry about drivers, worry about what specs their computers are and what FPS they will get, etc., they just want to pop in a game and play.
