Can a RAM slot suddenly go bad after many years?

Hi all.

Recently my PC refused to post, after searching the archives here (very helpful, thank you) I found that if there is a ram chip in one particular slot in the Asus P6T Deluxe V2, it won't post, and I get all fans on etc but no video signal.

Is it possible that after years of running fine, a slot can suddenly stop working? I can run it in dual channel now but it's a shame.

Would using an air spray on the slot possibly help?

I tried an air spray, but no difference unfortunately. If any stick is in that slot it won't start. Any combination of sticks in five other slots works fine... Though of course I just get dual channel...

cleaning the sticks with a rubber made no difference...

Can anything bring this sort of thing about? Just bad luck?

Got a similar problem recently with my board, after years one slot would work fine but if the ram is removed and re-inserted it stops working.... The solution in my case was to keep inserting again and again and suddenly it would start to function once more until the next time the Ram in tht slot is removed ! Strange isn't it....

Hmm, I'll try reinserting a few times more and see if it makes a difference. If it does, I'll post back. For now I'd guess the solution is indeed a faulty RAM slot. Sad times...

Thanks all
