I formatted my computer and replaced my graphics card because i was getting severe fps drops in games like counterstrike and jedi academy, where it should be able to handle them smoothly. It cant be a windows problem as i formatted or a graphics card problem as i replaced it and have the same issues. Even when i change the graphical settings in games from high to lowest, the severety is the same of the fps drops. I had a geforce fx 5600 and now have a radeon 9600 pro. My computer is an intel 1.3ghz with 640mb ram using XP. This is my motherboard:

Any ideas what can be done? This is quickly becoming a costly affair. Thank you very much in advance!

how many fps you get in your configurations? is it a problem that you always had since you bought your computer or if not, when did it exactly start? what kind of ram is it?

first, check you got all the updated drivers, including updated direct x. if not, and if youre willing to, install win98 and run the games from there to check wether its a hardware or software problem. sometimes xp manages your virtual memory in a weird manner and might hinder game performance. you can also try win2k if u want. also remember to close all programs before running a game.

My computer is so fast it proves the theory of relativity wrong... 😱

I get fine fps, then it all starts freezing up, to the point where the game is still running, but its unplayable as its so laggy. Counterstrike for eg. has a steady 70fps then drops to 5 - 15, sometimes locking for 3 seconds. It started a while after i got my geforce fx 5600, was working fine for a while then it started to happen. Things worked perfectly when i got my computer, its recent last month or so. Ram is 640 RDRAM.

I updated all the drivers including direct x. I'm sure it cant be an operating system problem as i formatted and had exactly the same problem. Its really confusing cuz it cant be my gfx card or the op system. I've tried turning settings to minimum setting gfx card to max performance(not overclocking) also had a look at the bios things seem ok.
