Why not? P3's are damn good, sure dvd burning takes up some serious system resources, so forget even checking email while its burning :), but look at it this way...

Go to <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-012&depa=0" target="_new">http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-012&depa=0</A>

for 81 bucks you get a black 8x dvd burner shipped to your door, its freaking awesome (i have one) and practically silent while burning. EVEN if your system can't handle it, you still have yourself a killer burner for future use :).

As for if your system can handle it? make sure you have a big enough swap file, ram, hard drive, etc and burning at 1x shouldn't overload too bad. I threw my burner in an external usb 2.0 box, sweet and can take it wherever i go! For like 20 bucks you could get a usb 2.0 pci card, i find that is doesn't overload the system nearly as much as burning on the ide channels where in forget using your computer for anything else because its really using the same ide channel for burning and accessing hard drive, etc...

I recommend LiteOn LDW-811S or LiteOn SOHW-812S

You will need to be sporting at least a minimum of 128Mb RAM, and be running at least Win98!

You'd have a better chance of success with 256Mb of RAM, your swap file not limited, and at least 10Gb of free hardrive space.

Oh Yes also the DVD burner must have buffer underun protection.
