Can i use a SSD SATA III DRIVE CONNECTED TO SATA II PORT?

Solution
Yes it would be better if a SATA 3 6Gb/s ssd is connected to a SATA 3.0 6Gb/s port on the motherboard.

Yes, SATA 3.0 6 Gb/s ports are compatible with SATA 3.0 6Gb/s ssd's.

Sorry, that was a bit confusing. Typically, you'll only be worried about two parts: the controller and whatever device you have hooked up to it. So you can run a SATA I (1.5Gb) drive on a SATA II/III port (99% of the time), but you won't see any benefit over running it on a SATA I port. Conversely, you can run a SATA III drive on an old port, but you'll be severely limited by the bus.

Marvell is a company that makes SATA controllers whereas AHCI is a controller type/protocol. So what your asking is kind of like, "which is better, a car or a Honda?" Do you have two specific motherboards or southbridges you'd like compared?

Your SATA controller is the JMicron JMB363 if that's the board you are running. Of course, you are also running Intel's ICH10R southbridge as well. I believe that you should be running in AHCI. It's supposed to be better than IDE, but I'm hitting the extent of my knowledge at this point, maybe someone else knows what the big differences are.

TRIM is a Microsoft Windows 7 feature. It is a message from Windows 7 to the solid state drive that a user has deleted data. The Windows 7 TRIM feature is supposed to help the ssd's garbage collection function. Not all operating systems have the TRIM feature.

Intel and Marvell are names for SATA controllers used in solid state drives and motherboards. Intel Controllers are preferred over Marvell controllers. In a lot of the newer Intel cpu motherboards the Intel controller is included in a single integrated Intel chipset. In older motherboards the Intel controller was sometimes included in the Intel Southbridge chipset.

Hello again Johnylucky,

Where can i do i find the latest Marvell 6gps drivers?

My Asus Rampage III Extreme came with two Sata III Marvell seems to these are kind of slow if so is it because these things don't run the latest drivers ( I'm 100% percent i have these set up properly in the BIOS System )

Perhaps if i purchase a Raid Card will make these SATA Marvell III ( 6gps ) fully functional, faster transfer, reading and writing?

And finally do you recommend buying a Raid Card?

Thank you for all the advice.

Hello again,

Sometimes my work requires to handle large Photo and Video files. What is the most reliable RAID set up?

Assuming i have the raid controller card with 512 cache built in on the ASUS X58?

How about without the Raid controller card on the ASUS X58?

As always your feedback is much appreciated
