Can My PSU Handle a x2 6400?

Hello everyone. I have a simple question for all of you. I am wondering if my PSU (a Thermaltake TR2 430w) could handle a x2 6400 as well as 2gb of RAM, 1 HDD, a dvd drive, 3 fans, and a x1900gt? If it cannot would you guys recommend a corsair vx550w or a OCZ StealthXStream 600w? Thanks in advanced!

430 watts would be pushing the limits for that rig.

I tried that PSU calculator and it said my pc would use 299 watts. So, theoreticaly, it could work but my PSU only has 18 amps on the 12v rail. To me it just seem like it isn't enough amps.

That is a bit too low, that equates to 216W provided by the +12v, and since most power draw in the system will be on that rail, I would try and get a better PSU. The Corsair VX550 is a great choice, a better on then the OCZ StealthXStream is.

I have the corsair and i'm running a x2 6000+ with 2gigs, a hard disk, and a 8800gt, runs like a dream. The 12v rail has amp out the wazoo, so you can be safe and happy

I think I am going to either get a corsair vx550w or hx520w. The vx550w is 69.99 AR but the hx has modular cables which is soooo tempting.

no problem. had an x2 6400+ running on 13amp 275 watt generic power supply.

Id upgrade it to something better, but it likely will run the system for a while until it blows from being overloaded. It will also run very hot.
FSP (Fortron Source) makes super reliable inexpensive PSU's

Short answer Yes, but not with the power hungry vid card you have. I would go for 500-650 watts

I'd avoid the OCZ(FSP made), Zalman and the FSP if you can. The SeaSonic is good, and anything of SeaSonic make will have similar quality. Corsair HX and VX450 are SeaSonic, as are the Antec NeoHE power supplies and the PC Power and Cooling Silencers. The Corsair VX550 is Channel Well Tech made, and is still of great quality, CWT usually makes industrial PSUs(a good thing).

FSP is super reliable, I say this because I've worked in a computer store for a number of years and have yet to see an FSP unit fail. We sold probably 3-6 a day, and used many of them in our new builds. Antec probably has a worse record than the cheap generic PSU's that only say CHINA on them.

The new Antec Earthwatts are made by Seasonic as well as the trio, they aren't the Antec PSUs of old. The only really crappy Antecs were the Smartpower, they had a run of bad caps I think.

That PSU calculator actually is telling you the recommended PSU size not the load number. Unfortunately your TR 2 is a tier 4 PSU so you should probably change it out anyway. Official XS Tiered PSU Manufacturer Brand Listing Phase III

Not to mention you probably didn't add in the capacitor aging which changes the final number.

Definitely, the NeoHE, NeoPower(not the old NeoPowers, but the new ones I believe are), Earthwatts, and True Power Trio are all SeaSonic, which might be the best power supply manufacturer. As a general rule, if SeaSonic made it, it is going to be of at least decent quality.

Order a PC Power & Cooling 610 for $119 dirrect from them.
One large 49Amp 12V rail (so it can be used 100% ).
That is a -constant- rateing @ 40C...not surge @ 25C.

The Silencers are great buys, but they can be quite expensive depending on what model and where you buy, but the 610W is possibly the best PSU for its price right now, its gone down in price a lot in the past months, just at the end of last year Newegg had them for about $40 more then they do now.
