Can only connect wirelessly via WEP or no security to Netgear router

I tried to setup a WNB2100 last night to work with my Vista laptop that has a built in b/g wireless card. I plugged the cable modem into the wireless router, then plugged a cable from my laptop into the back of the router, that works as expected.

Then I logged in to the router and setup the wireless network with the SSID, channel auto, then tried to use all the security options, starting with "WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]" as it said that was the most secure, all using the same passphrase, but could only get my laptop to connect and get out to the internet when I set the security options to none or WEP, which aren't the best options. When trying the other settings it would connect with limited connectivity then not be able to get out to the internet, or not connect at all as i tried all the different options in the wireless network setup on my laptop.

Do i need to have a wireless N card in my laptop to get the 3 more secure WPA, WPA2, and WPA + WPA2 options to work, or should they work with my b/g built-in wireless card? I had the passphrase correct, so maybe I just did something wrong in the wireless setup on the laptop? It took me about a minute to get it to work both with no security or with WEP, so I think i have the process down ok but am just missing something.

I could be off the mark here but I believe some routers invite you to use a passphrase which is then converted it to a security key and that's the one to input in the computer. Either way, it will be case-sensitive.

WEP, which was the only security option other than None that worked, converted the passphrase into a hex sequence, which I then copied and pasted into my laptop and it worked. the other three did not convert it, just asked for a passphrase and did not spit back a hex sequence.

My only suggestion from here is to add the network details manually into the OS and sit back for a few minutes to see if it connects automatically. Assuming the card can see and identify your network, it should have no problem with at least WPA/PSK TKIP, it should happen but I don't suggest pushing your luck with WPA2[/#000ff]

Exact same problem as rjo98. I know the thread is old but just wanted to let people know that the problem still exists. I have a satellite toshiba laptop, and my wife has a sony vio, and neither could connect. Also, neither of us could connect using our HTC Evo Sprint phones. I'm currently using WEP security and would like to find a fix so that we can use a stronger encryption.

WPA/PSK TKIP is pretty universal -- the problem can be that some versions of Windows and phone operating systems now don't describe it that way but use phrases like WPA Personal (as with Apple, I believe). This is confusing.

I do find it hard to believe that an devices where models are changed so frequently like mobile phones would be stuck in the age of WEP.

Meanwhile, I really wouldn't lose sleep over using WEP -- sure it can be hacked by kids who've visited a 'kule' website but how many of those are within reliable wireless range of you ?

OMG i am having the same problem.I have a toshiba satalite laptop and a netgear router and on wep or no security it connects so i got an internet camera and wanted to change the security level to wpa-psk(tkip) and now i cant connect.It is saying something like it computer is timing out.I dont have a clue on what to do .If you solve the problem let me know,thanks Len0272@yahoo.com.

What you really need to do is run windows update, worked for me on vista, you should check for most updated driver go to Wireless network connection status/ properties/ configure/ update driver.

I am having the same problem!!! This is highly frustrating. I have owned two Netgear Range Max Wireless N Routers (that have both burned out their internet ports in the back). Therefore I went back to reliable Linksys/Cisco's routers. My old Linksys wireless G router connects everything without a problem, but my new E4200 MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE Linksys router displayed several connection problems when using the TKIP and WES encryption. The only one that works is WEP. I don't mind using WEP, but computer sources keep marketing that the WEP connection is not only less secure, but slower than the other encryptions. It is weird that so many people are having this issue.

Ran into a similar problem.

I believe this problem is common with atheros wireless adapters (AR5007xx).

I simply downloaded and updated the driver from www.atheros.cz (http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=22&system=4) and it worked.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you. I had some trouble getting it to find the driver after downloading it, but after a few tries my connection magically works again.

It was my mothers laptop and she has been having that problem for a long time. Finally buckled down to try and fix it.

Hurray for old drivers that cant be detected without manual downloads!

OMG! I just spent two days trying everything under the sun, from Hotfixes, to convoluted deep seeded bio instructions trying to get my new wireless router to connect to the internet on my old Acer Aspire 4520 lapton that has the "atheros wireless adapter (AR5007xx), that isn't too happy connecting to the internet using the WPA2 security protocol. Then I finally came across your little suggestion and wa-la it's a MIRACLE! it worked! I was so relieved and excited, I just spent another hour trying to figure out how to get registered and logged on just so I could thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to give others your experience in fixing the same type of problem so we too were having as well as to let others know who are having troubles logging on to the Internet after buying a new wireless router using the WPA2 security set up. If this is what you are having trouble with and have the Atheros Wireless Card in your laptop this is the fix for you, TRUST ME! :) Again, thank you a million! xoxoxooxox

i had the same problem to where my living room pc wich i have it wireless would only see my network as wep and not wpa2 so it wouldn't connect or connect but limited...what i did was since i could connect either with wep or open network ..i just left it open so i could connect to the internet then i went to devices and under network adapters right clicked my wireless card then-upgrade driver software then search automaticly for updated driver software..it updated my wireless card then i put my network back on wpa2 i click connect again and it worked!..so basicly all u need to to is update ur wireless card driver and ur set to go..hope this help someone as it worked for me
