I have an new Nvidia 1070 that I'm planning to use in a new PC build, but I'm getting anxious to try it. Would putting it into my old PC first cause problems when I go to put it into my new one?
It won't cause any problems.
but make sure you have PSU that supplies enough power and have 6 or 8 pin connectors (depends on GPU brand).
if you gonna play games on old build with GTX 1070, you need a powerful CPU that could handle the 1070 without bottle necking.
and at the time of new build you just need to install drivers in new system.

not even if the old pc is a different chipset? old pc is AMD, new pc is intel.

Chipset doesn't matter, all you need is a PCIe express slot and proper PSU (at least 500-550W bronze certified)
