Can u run Athlon XP 3200+ at 333 MHz?

If I needed to, could I run the AMD Athlon XP 3200+ at a 333 MHz or lower FSB. I know... whats the point in getting one if you don't use it at 400 MHz, but I like to know the product before I get it. It is advertized only as 400 FBS as opposed to earlier models being advertized as 333/166/133 MHz. Would the 3200+ be able to clock the FSB back?

You'll need to check your mobo, will be a BIOS setting. If you don't have the mobo yet, then you can download the manuals from the companies you are considering purchasing from.

The xp 3200+ runs @ 2.2ghz, with a 200/400 mhz fsb. At 166/333, the chip would only run at 1.83ghz. It would just be recognized as an xp2500+.

As no-one else has suggested it, how about just buying an XP-mobile chip? They run at a lower bus by default (133), but I've never heard of anyone <i>not</i> being able to really easily exceed XP3200+ speeds with a XP-M 2500+ or 2600+ chip.

It would cost less;
Would have an unlocked multiplier so at 166 you'd be able to keep the speed up;
it would likely require less voltage at a given clockspeed, therefore less heat;
it would almost certainly overclock more (if you're at all interested).

Personally, I think you'd have to be nuts to buy a Desktop 3200+ over a Mobile XP.

There are 3000+ bartons that work on a 166/333 fsb, 2166 Mhz. I know, I have one. They are unlocked downwards only, which is cool since my motherboard can handly 200/400 fsb, so using a lower multiplier it overclocks effortlessly to 3200+ and beyond.

As someone else pointed out, if you buy a 3200+ (400 fsb) and run it on a 333 motherboard, you're wasting your money.

I thought all 3000+ bartons were 166FSB? I thought the only XP chip with the 400 bus was the 3200+.

I do seem to recall reading about some big OEM that had some 3200+ chips that were still on the 166bus though - they were 2.25Ghz or something, to make up for the lower bus speed.

AMD later made 400 MHz FSB AXP 3200+. They ran at 2.1 GHz instead of 2.17 GHz

AMD supplied some 2.33 GHz (333 MHz FSB) AXP 3200+ to HP, probably very little in quantity.
