Can you play games on a dvd rw

i am looking to buy a dvd drive but i keep seeing dvd rewriters. do they play games.

Yes that's what you want when buying an OD.
It will play CD and DVD disc as well as burn them.
Either IDE or Sata depending on your mobo and age of system.
Of course you need a full pc system to play games.
