^I had the same problem after updating my graphics drivers, for some reason this "PnP" thing in "Screens" went off and I just toggled it back on and then I could adjust the brightness again.
Hope the picture explains, because I'm bad at explaining in english.
in device manager go to display driver>intel hd graphics family>update driver>chose form existing> select the earliest driver..u remember since the problem started...problem solved.

I've been trying to figure this out for so long, thank you all so much. I also just created an account so that I can thank you!!

OMG this worked! I tried updating my graphic and etc, didn't work. But this one solved the problem! Thanks!!!!

A driver rollback is most likely the second best solution if you can't enable the generic PnP Monitor device (my PC acted like this for a few months after my initial upgrade to Widows 10 - weird). Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if all the hardware providers are savvy with the new version of Windows yet. It may take a few months before AMD/ATI catches on...

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you so much, have tried all manner of GPU Drivers, Uninstalled PnP --> rescan--> install Generic PnP = no more eye pain from my laptop monitor stuck on full brightness, battery happier too!!!!

Thank you.

Made an account just to say that you're awesome, thank you 😀

Thanks, had that problem and now it's fixed!

I just created an account to thank you.

I had experienced this issue right after upgrading to Win 10 on my HP EliteBook 8570p and figured out the solution. Unfortunately, possibly due to a Win 10 update, the issue reappeared and I couldn't remember how I'd solved it so I had to start digging around again for a solution. This post pointed me in the right direction and with a little more troubleshooting, I discovered that if you are running TeamViewer, it installs a "PnP-Monitor (Standard)" driver which throws a wrench in the works. I've detailed my solution below. Hopefully it'll help someone else from beating their head against a wall trying to figure it out.

1) Search for Device Manager in Start Menu
2) Expand the Monitors section
3) Look for "PnP-Monitor (Standard)", right-click and select "Update Driver Software..."
4) Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
5) Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
6) Select Generic PnP Monitor and click "Next" and this should resolve the issue

Hello you can adjust screen brightness just by doing little setting. Follow these steps..
1. Go to Device Manager and there you see a list of all devices. Expand the monitor section and and double click on Generic Monitor PnP and then click on enable device. After that you can able to adjust brightness of your screen ..

I also just created an account just to thank you!!

I do have one thing to add: When I clicked on 'monitors' in Device Manager, the PnP was already enabled. Which left me VERY confused. Then I realized that my initial download of my AMD graphics driver after installing Windows 10 was unsuccessful. SO, if someone else's PnP is already enabled and you can't adjust your brightness. Click on 'Display Adapters' in Device Manager. If there is yellow triangle with an exclamation point beside the AMD driver, you'll need to install the new driver (which can be done by right clicking, then choosing for windows to install/update). Once you're AMD driver is installed, it will disable the PnP. Once you enable the PnP, it will all be working smoothly again (or at least it should if you're having the same issue as me). Add me to the list, i just created this account to thank you. Have read so many suggestions related to drivers, and it was just a device setting. Thank you so much.

Thank you very very much for the solution, I am really very very happy.

I literally signed up to write this comment.

I was searching for this solution since quite a long time, same problem was there in windows 8.1 too..
I was really pissed off with the bright screen.
Finally as a last resort, I decided to move back to windows 8, backed up my data, prepared Bootable disk and thought let me google one last time... and thank god I found this...
Reinstalling windows, adobe and other software is such a headche.

Thank you once again.

hats off to tom's Hardware.

Of course new account to thank you all.

Searched a lot for a solution since the Windows 10 insider was first released and something conflicted leaving my screen to full brightness all the time or without backlight whenever I switched to generic display driver as some others suggested.

The SOLUTION to my HP Pavilion dm4 (brightness slider not working) was to uninstall the monitor listed in the device manager and letting the system detect the monitor again.

Hats off to you guyz. Cheers.

Solution 1
1) Go to Device Manager in Start Menu
2) Go to the Monitors section
3) Right click on Generic PnP Monitor and click Enable

Solution 2
1) Go to Device Manager in Start Menu
2) Go to the Monitors section
3) Right click on PnP-Monitor (Standard) and click update Driver Software...
4) Click Browse my computer for driver software
5) Click Let me pick from a list..........
6) Select Generic PnP Monitor and click next
7) Wait till it finish....... Now you can change your brightness

i fixed my prob using solution 2 😀

You're a genius! Thanks!!! I have literally been in search of an answer forever!!!!!!! My eyeballs have suffered tremendously! Thank you!!!

It's taken months to find this for my HP Pavilion Dv7 which would only work with Windows 10 by not using the AMD graphics drivers - both of which Device Manager reported as "Working," using the Microsoft basic PNP driver - Which had no control of the brightness of the screen.
I tried all of the above, to no effect,
I had already updated all drivers.
The cure for me was ...
1) Uninstall the AMD low power Graphics Card driver from the Device manager.
2) Reboot.
It was that simple!

Thank you, so much!

I was struggling for weeks with this problem and now it's gone.

:)
