Hi everyone

I have a HP Vista laptop that doesn't recognize my external western digital usb HD or USB sticks (which all work fine on my Win7 laptop). However the Vista laptop does recognize a USB mouse so I'm assuming it's not a USB problem.

I've also checked Computer Management on the Vista machine and the external drive or USB sticks are not shown

I don't know if it's connected but the Vista laptop also has a habit of spontaniously shutting down that doesn't seem to be connected to overheating.

Any suggestions will be deeply appreciated

regards

I also get that from 1 usb port on my HP laptop.
I think it may be underpowered or something. It works better when its powered by cable or on its dock.
Check your drivers and update where needed. There is a Driver updater you can find at HP support that checks and lists all the drivers that need updating. Find that, it may be helpful.

- Thanks for that, I plugged in the laptop and it worked! But I must admit I don't understand why power should be an issue when the external HD has it's own supply.
But never mind - I can get on with my computer life

thanks again
