I recently noticed that my updates were not being installed because I reserved windows 10 and now I have decided not to upgrade just yet because I don't have a big enough external hard drive to back up my files, so until I do I will not install windows 10. For now I just want to install my windows 8.1 updates, so how do I go by removing the windows 10 update from trying to install?

Solution

In the list of updates for 8.1, deselect the Windows 10 Upgrade.

In the 8.1 upgrade window:
Click on Show all available updates.
Under 'Optional', deselect "Upgrade to Windows 10"

BTW, you can also do several things to cleanup your drive if space is tight to get the update working (Not sure how much is needed because it varies by the person due to making a backup image):

1) uncheck then remove the W10 Pro download (create an ISO from MS Media Creation Tool on "other PC" option, burn, then delete the ISO file you had downloaded)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install

2) right-click C-drive in Windows Explorer->Properties-> Cleanup... System cleanup and remove as much as you can

3) Disable Hibernation

4) Set a Pagefile cap (maybe 1GB.. will reset with W10 so doesn't matter much)

5) Move whatever you can to an external drive (it not only takes up space by itself but also ends up part of the backup)

Then...
Insert the DVD (made with Imgburn) or USB stick (Rufus) you'd created while Windows is running. It should then run and if you don't have enough space should end up back at Windows 8.1.

If it does finish then I'd test everything and delete the backup file (system cleanup as per before) but be sure.

My W10 install seems pretty stable now though I did a CLEAN install after the upgrade though that was over a month ago. I did have freezing and other issues but Microsoft has mostly got things to the point where people seem to be mostly fine with updates still coming to fix issues.

I've tried de-selecting it and when I select my updates that I want to install windows 10 still tries to install. I've also tried hiding the update but it still hasn't worked.

Every time I try to install just my 8.1 updates I get, " Downloading Windows 10..Getting setup files.."

My updates worked thought windows 10 was trying to install anyways, though I would like that annoying get windows 10 window to stop popping up.

Thanks
