Cant install XP

I brought a old dell pc off trade me about a year ago and i would like to sell it on with a legal copy of windows xp pro.
It has a coa sticker on the case but whenever i try to install it, it wont accept the cd key.

Are you using a Dell OEM XP disk? That key will at the least only work with an OEM disk, at may only work with a Dell OEM disk.

If i use a dell OEM disk it doesn't require me to enter a cd key...
Is it still legal like that?

Yes, it's legal to use a Dell Windows XP OEM CD with a Dell computer.

A dell computer with windows installed with a dell oem disk will not ask you for a key most of the time as long as the oem license matches the install!

Because the keys are matched to the dell bios
