capture card or minidv camcorder

Q. which produces better quality file on the hard drive, vhs video into avi
by an internal capture card OR vhs video via s-video cable passed through a
minidv camcorder then to a PC via firewire? I know that minidv is a set
dv-avi format.

If you use a PC card, you can capture in any format, not only DV. By
using a lossless codec, such as Huffyuv, you should get better
quality, IMHO -assuming, of course, a good quality capture card.

I think one major factor would be the capture card used. Some of them seem
to not perform well. Canopus seems to be highly regarded. A friend
converted one VHS tape for me using a Dazzle card. I got better results
recording to my Sony camcorders. I just copy all my VHS tapes directly to
my digital camcorder. This also provides me with an archive copy in DV
format. I was told the Time Base Correction on the Sony's worked well. It
seems to have worked well for me and am satisfied with the results. I did
some testing with two of my older VCR's and did notice a difference in image
quality.
