Is it possible to capture still photos from a video?

Still images, often called PhotoShots are usually captured via the software
which came with the camera specifically for that purpose - and usually with
a USB or Serial cable, NOT with firewire.

Look in the camcorder manual for details.

Do you mean save a frame from the video on the pc if you haven't taken a
still, then what software do you have? Some will allow you to just save a
frame straight from the camera, others need you to capture the video to the
pc first and then save the frame. HAve a look in the help files to see which
yours can do.

Thanks Graham and Cari,

I found the disk that came with my Canon Optura 100 MC. It is called PhotoDV by a company that I think went out of business, Digital Origin. The software is meant for a PC with up to Windows 2000, but it seems to work OK with XP as well. The photoDV software is a plug-in that works with my Adobe Photo Deluxe Home Edition via my firewire port on my video camera. There are many steps involved, but I was able to make the Adobe software make a .jpg photo from a frame of video. The quality is terrible compared to taking still photos with my video camera's multimedia card, but it is acceptable for what I'm trying to get accomplished. Thanks again.

If you used windows movie maker to capture a small amount of the video and
then grabbed a frame from that it might be better. Also, as each frame is
made up of two fields it is best to deinterlace stills from movie. Have a
look through the help in adobe for where it may be, in the full version it
is in filters. Choose to have it interoperlate the picture to make up the
missing pixels.
