In my tower I have an old Sony CRX 140E cd-rewriter, which came as part of
the original set-up. I would now like to replace the unit with a DVD
burner/re-writer. My question is, as I cannot find the original software
which came with the Sony, can I just disable or remove the unit in my
hardware set-up and then replace it with a dvd rewriter. Many thanks for any
help or advice given.

It is quite simple. Just unplug the old drive and plug in the new
drive. Windows will do everything else for you 😉

Just make sure you hook everything up inside correctly.

Succintly put Nathan.

One more thing of which to be aware. If you buy a DVD drive, you will alsop
need DVD player software if it is to be used for watching DVD movies.
Windows does not have the necessary CODECS as standard.

Now a full DVD player such as WinDVD or PowerDVD will provide all this for
you, and one is usually suplied with a retail packaged DVD Unit. If you buy
an OEM DVD Writer, it will not have software. You can watch DVDs in Movie
Player if you download the CODECS only. These cost just a few dollars. Do a
Google and search for them.

What will be of greater importance is the DVD/CD writing software. If you
got Nero or some other 3rd party app with the PC it will need to be upgraded
to write DVD data or DVD movie files. ALso some of the earlier versions need
updates to recognise DVD models.

Make you own choices.
