I recently upgraded from 98SE to XP Professional with no major problems. I did an upgrade, not a format and fresh install. Now, if I insert a CD in either my DVD drive or CD writer, the drive spins up but the media is not recognised. If I click on the drive icon in My Computer, I get a message saying that the drive is empty, please insert a disc. However, if I leave the discs in the drives and reboot, the discs are recognised and I can access them as normal. I can play music by accessing the controls on the front of the DVD drive without rebooting, so I do not suspect the drives. Any suggestions, as this is driving me nuts!

After spending ages trying various fixes, I decided to bite the bullet and do a format and clean install of XP. Everything came up roses. I have read many articles that say a clean install is best, but that is probably not possible for everyone. Who has all the installation CD's etc. for everything on their PC anymore?

heh, you are crazy, i keep all the drivers, old or not.
But the place to go is the net for drivers. (Almost) Always get the newest drivers

dont know about your cd prob. actually, i had the same trouble once... but i forgot to reboot 😉
