and id say my budget is about 260 but i kinda want a new cpu and gpu
Yeah, if you just want a gaming machine for the moment you could take a good singlecore, like the Athlon64 3700+ (2.2GHz1 1M L2) for $68:
http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=A64-3700CF
Just slightly OC it and you have the performance of:
1. a 4000+ @ 2.4GHz
2. a FX-55 @ 2.6GHz
3. a FX-57 @2.8 GHz
So there's no need to get these more expensive CPUs, however, If this build was to live you for more than 6 months, I'd insist on the Opteron 165 I mentioned before, because newer games will almost all support dual core CPUs and you will get a boost with them.

and......if you want to spend on a getter video card, now that I am thinking, your existing 3000+ is a good overclocker, so why not just overclock that to ~2.4GHz; it will only take you a 267MHz HTT, just drop the HTT multi to 4x or 3x, a touch on the RAM divider, lock PCI-e and PCI and that's all; should be a breeze for your motherboard to run with these settings and you wont spend anything on the CPU, concentrating on a ~$260 video card.

look at some benchmarks and that will most likely tell you which processor is good for you because in the end it comes down to what you actually want.

3700 would be the processor i would pick in this situation but it depends on you.

If you want a daul core buy the opty 165. It will cost you $153 at newegg but will give you a bit more life ONLY if you jknow how to overclock. Otherwise it will be like a downgrade to you system.

Sounds like you need major help with overclockuing basics. Read both the articls on Toms and the anandtech guide I posted earlier. If this does not make sense to you, do not nuy the 165. Get the 4000+ instead even though it is single core.

People keep talking about multi core gaming, but developer have resisted it for years. Few games will be coming out they will really see much of an advantage this year. Alan Wake which was originally scheduled for this year, require dual core and be optimized for quad core, but it has been pushed back to fall/winter 08, and possibly longer.

If you get the opty 165, DO NOT WASTE you money on the POS graphics card. I understand budget builds, I have to do the smae thing as I am in grad school, but budget with performance requires knowing how to overclock and choosing the right pieces to last. For a video card, tom has a great article:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/02/06/the_best_gaming_video_cards_for_the_money/

Please note the chart and recomendation on upgrading to a new card. That is very similar to my own beliefs.

Ok now your getting ridiculous. The title of your post is "CHEAP GOOD S939 PROCESSOR?"

Now your saying you have $260?

You can get a X2 3600+ Brisbane w/ mobo for $160 and a gig of DDR2 800 cas4 for another $100 = $260 , however you'll need a pci-e
video card
but i dont want a new motherboard? or new ram? i want a new processor and a new video card

Wont that be kinda minor upgrade cause i want a big upgrade for cheap that will last me awhile
Then get that Opteron 165; it's for your socket 939, while a socket AM2 system implies that aside from the CPU, you spend money on a motherboard (while you already have a good one) and RAM; yes, AM2 needs DDR2 and you can not recycle your DDR RAM for an AM2 system.
So, if this setup is going to last you kind of 1 year or more, get the dualcore Opteron 165 and overclock it to 2.4 GHz at least, if it is for less, then just overclock your 3000+; It's not woth to upgrade to another single core, because the 3000+ overclocks like a dog and will give you no troubles, just like the opteron, so, overall, IMO, you have 2 main options to chose from;
1-OC-ing the 3000+ leaves all your $260 for a good videocard, but still you're not as future-proof on multithreaded games and have less multitasking capabilities.
2-Opteron 165 (and overclocking it); more future proof, better multitasking, fewer money left for the video card.
P.S: This is THE ONLY "the big upgrade for cheap" that will last you a while

As you all know I am looking to upgrade my processor. The point in me upgrading is because I would like to be able to run games smoothly. I was mainly looking at dual core processors. Right now I have this motherboard so I am looking for something that would work with that. I just found out that that motherboard has both socket 939 and AM2. I would like to spend little as possible but still be able to notice a difference in performance.

System Specs.
AMD 64 3000+
Nvidia 6600 TD (upgrading to this)
1GB Patriot Ram
160GB SATA II HDD

Please any help would be greatly appreciated!

well you guys know my mother board is 939 and am2 right?

dude i dont understand the overclocking guide

so how would i go about overclocking my processor now?

Well I believe that should cover the quotes!

First of all you don't fully understand the Asrock AM2 upgrade card, to go that route you'll be buying.

1. The AM2 Upgrade Card
2. An AM2 CPU
3. DDR2 Memory

http://www.asrock.com/mb/spec/AM2CPU Board.asp

Its called an upgrade card but it changes your M/B from socket 939 to socket AM2, with the AM2 requiring DDR2 memory inserted in the memory slots on the upgrade card.

You've already admitted you don't know a thing about overclocking, asking for step by step instructions, SO Don't Overclock!

You stated a $260.00 budget, where as you're going to upgrade from your existing a CPU and GPU, and without OCing a cheaper Opty or some route as that its not going to happen, unless someone here is going to hold your hand all the way through the OCing and thats not going to be me.

No Offence But With the obvious skills you have my reccomendation is for you to stay the 939 course, since you already possess 1 Gig of DDR memory, and though its the CPU you've been advised to stay away from, I'm reccommending getting yourself an FX57, its multiplier unlocked.

Its past your budget right there, but you get what you pay for, and its pretty much slap in and go, no problems, and thats what you need, then saving for a video card upgrade later.
