As all the dualcores without distinction, for at least 1 year it will be a quite respectable build, after that, there will be cheaper quads, AMDs K10 will rock more than anything else before and Penryn will be knocking on it's door.
However, the overall performance of your system will still remain decent under Vista for quite some years  .

Just a thought I just bought a 939 Socket Amd Athlon 64 X2 4800+ from Tigerdirect for 279.99 and I have it overclocked to 3GHZ on a watercooling set-up.. I think it is a given it will not match the Core duo performance but I question with faster and faster GPU's coming out all the time and 10X ten relies alot more on the GPU do you need Core duo power???? I don't think you need all the processing power. If you have the money for the 4800+ I would recommend this chip for anybody who is looking to upgrade a 939 socket. I upgraded from a 3800 X2 and there is a big difference ( 3800 X2 was running 2.0 stock ) Any dually will do I feel until the Amd Quads are released

Cheers :D

how long do you think that will last me?

Timewise

Well the rate software is catching up to hardware, you'll have excellent performance for about a year, as long as you stay away from the downgrade to Vistas performance level and keep running WinXP.

Theres a big difference between just getting by and performance, but whats out there today you'll be in the performance level for at least awhile, you'll be surprised at the resolutions that video card will allow.

The big difference will come when pretty much all the marketed software can take advantage of the multicores capabilities, and that day is coming, but not today.

What I mean is, The multicore CPU does effect the total output of even the fastest GPU and when the software is optimized the CPU will even have more of a final effect paired with the GPUs performance.

Especially if AMD pulls off the graphics card directly communicating with the CPU, like the memory is.

You say a 3.0G K8 won't match a Core2?! ... certainly it mathces everything at least up to stock E6600 and below.

Well a 3 GHZ K8 Dually will match the 6600 in everything but gaming... I checked on tomshardware and the AMD 74 @ 3GHZ Vs a 6600 core duo the 6600 won 19 benchmarks to the AMD 74's 16 benchs won.. I know the 74 has DDR 2 but that was the closest comparsion I could draw... Still not bad performance for today I think a 3 GHZ dually should do me fine for sometime.. Hope AMD's Quad will meet expectations *sigh*

Cheers
